The appearance on this is a black color with a beige head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, and licorice. The flavor has some odd annoying sour citrus tone to it along with more chocolate and coffee. The finish is bitter and sour as well. Overall this beer would be ok minus the sourness from the raspberries, but with it not good!

Thanks to pfoxyjohn for another good Wisconsin beer. This one pours almost black with a nice, tight sustaining head that leaves some beautiful lacing. Molasses, tart cherries, raspberries and tart grapes along with sweet amlts and a slight sourness in the aromas. Taste is smooth and slightly sweet with the aforementioned fruity qualities along with a smidgen of java and still the very slight sourness in a very smooth porter. This is a very nice black beer - loved it - thanks John.

thanks john! .. . fun to try this! .. chocolate and raspberry with tar in the nose .. . very intresting stuff .. . cherry, chocolate, sugar crystals, and light roast in the taste .. . light tartness, a tad confusing but very tame and tasty .. . almost like a cherry cordial .. . peace, love, and valvoline...

Thanks to pfoxyjohn for this one. Pours an almost black color with a medium tan head. Aroma is smokey malts, chocolate and raspberries. The taste is similar to the aroma. I'm not a fan of raspberries but this one wasn't bad. The fruitiness seems to be well-balanced.

I have recently got into Porters and I had this on a train ride home from work. Unfortunately out of the bottle (I will give it a 6 for appearance, how could it be any worse?). Chocolate and coffee with a strong raspberry presence on the nose. Taste is similar, but the raspberry flavor is rather cloying and artificial tasting and IMO, too much. Toned down a bit, this would have been a much more enjoyable beer. On the sweet side. Need to try again, especially poured into a glass.

Pours a dark brown/black with very thin tan head. Aroma of artificial raspberry flavoring, chocolate, and coffee. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery. Taste is predominantly raspberries and roasted malts with hints of coffee and chocolate. Just not my thing.

Nice to see this beer make a return appearance. Pours a deep chocolate brown with a bubbly tan head. Raspberry syrup, cocoa and roasted malt aromas. Mouthfeel is sharp and tangy. Flavor is dominated by sour raspberries that taste somewhat artificial and metallic, and overpower the light malt profile. The finish mellows and smooths a bit, with chocolate joining the tart raspberries. An interesting, fine drinking beer but I had bigger hopes for this one.

Beer is a beutiful dark mahogony color - looks like a glass of licorice with a foamy, almond colored head. Aroma is of raspberry, cocoa and malt and opens with a bang, but quickly fades and is probably a bit too light overall. Flavor is focused on a sour raspberry note that totally overpowers the malts. Finish and aftertaste add a nice bitter cocoa flavor that is probably the best part of this beer's taste. I think they might have tried a bit too hard with this one - a good idea, but overall it was pretty average.

Bottle. Poured a clear, blackish-brown color with a small, light-brown head. Aroma of caramel. Nice mouthfeel. Flavor is very raspberry-like, which isn't good for my reviewing. I'm not a raspberry fan. It tasted like chocolate-covered raspberries. If that is something that sounds good to you, then this would be a good beer for you. For me, not so much.

Definitely one of my favorite beers. Slight bite to the flavor from the raspberry, but it is not an overpowering flavor. In fact,it wasn't until I read Sprecher's description that I realized what the bite was from. Very smooth, clean feel. It has a slight sweetness that does get stronger the warmer it gets. Perfect combo of flavors, I wish I would have bought more when I was in Wisconsin.
