Smokeless Joe’s (Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 125 John Street)
650ml bottle

The aroma is very hoppy and perfumey with a hint of lemon and pine. The colour iss a hazy orange with a thin head which lasts. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. The flavour is hops, some citrus tones, and the expected strong bitterness on the back of the tongue.

9.5% abv on the label. Had this before at 11%. Regardless, it's still a very good beer. Smells sweet, piney and a bid medicinal. Smooth, full, oily mouthfeel. Sweet juicy fruity flavour, burnt pine, herbal and alcohol warmth. Appearance not so hot but it does have some slick lacing. Nice.

This year's version may be lighter on the strength, as this was labeled 9.5%, and didn't seem much more than that. More of an east coast DIPA, not so aggressive on the hops. Balance may be slighty off, but nothing to complain about. Actually nothing really wrong here, just doesn't stand out and fades into the overwhelming sea of slightly about average IPAs. Especially for a premium DIPA, there are better ones to be found.

A nice hazy orange and golden hue with a 2 finger cap that fades rapidly. The nose has a nice earthy, piney hop spice and some bitter sweetness from malty caramel undertones. This has a slightly bitter front that feels like it wont balance well with the alcohol, but finishes quite well. I did expect this to be a little more citrus/hop, as the malts a quite noticeable. The alcohol is well masked at the end.

Amber pour, tall thick head, nice lacing throughout. Big floral and grapefruit aromas and upfront flavors, malty sweetness to balance, some honeysuckle and nice bitter linger. Clean to be so big. Will revisit as it is easy to drink for an IIPA.

The nose was far more malty than I would expect, hops almost seemed faint. Color is dark gold with thick foamy head. Flavor is all hop burn, very nice. Overall it just wasn't top tier iipa for me.

Always a pleasure to get a new bottle of Southern Tier brew at the LCBO, this one being a lighter version (at 9.5% ABV). This Impy IPA pours a rich golden-amber colour with an off-white head, decent retention and good dirty lacing. Smell of pine needles with light alcohol and sweet malts balancing well things. Slightly syrupy, but mostly wet mouthfeel. Not as bitter as expected, with the hop showing more in the lingering aftertaste. The rest is the sweet malt found in malt liquor, but much better. A very easy drinking high-alcohol IPA that does not burn, but warms your winter nights.

Orange/amber pour with a small white head. Hops evident in the aroma but have to compete with the booziness. Very bitter taste with some caramel malt in the background but again, plenty of alcohol present. Seems more like a barleywine than a DIPA--could probably stand to drop the ABV 2 or 3 percent so the hops can shine through more.

Hell yeah! Why has it taken me this long to try this beer? Fantastic impy. Pours a bright cloudy orange colour with a huge ass head. Aroma is pretty sweet, fresh hops and floral notes. Taste is generously hopped underlined with some steady sweet caramel notes and bit of hotness in the finish.

Aroma is richly hoppy, almost evergreen, with a firm grapefruit undertone. It pours a nice orange amber with a fluffy and fairly persistent off-white head. Flavor is quite hoppy and slightly but pleasantly bitter, with a definite oak tone and more than a hint of grapefruit. Texture is rough and lively, leaving a nice tingle. Recommended to all "hop heads."

650 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.0%, 23 degrees Plato. Made with 2-row pale malt, cara-pils malt and red wheat. Kettle hops are Chinook and Cascade, dry hopped with Cascade, Centennial and Chinook. Orange to amber colour, big off-white head. Aroma of resinous American hops, also hints of stale orange marmalade. The medium sweet flavour is intensely hoppy throughout, bordering on "too much", piney and resinous notes. Some notes of old orange marmalade and caramel too. Not for the faint of heart.
