I've tried this 2 different times and was not impressed with either bottle. Muted earthy aroma with some citrus and caramel. Flavor is not as bitter as I had expected, even for an English IPA. There's an off taste to this one as well but it could be due to having an older bottle. Not one I would seek out again

Sampled on 9/22/2010. This India Pale Ale pours a medium orange gold color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized white foamy head, with decent retention and nice lacing. The aroma is fruity and sweet, citrusy and orange. Medium bodied India Pale Ale. The malts are fruity and sweet, touch of orange and orange peel. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Lively carbonation. Medium bitter IPA. A touch of citrusy bitterness lingers at the finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Big hop nose, lots of pine and citrus some fig and vanilla an a bit of biscuit. Light copper body pours a good head with very nice lace. Medium bodied mouth feel with slightly less tingle then I would prefer. HIts with a very balanced flavor profile (putting it in the English IPA range that the brewer is aiming for) plenty of grapefruit and pine with a solid malt backbone that is slightly sweet. Finish is strongly bitter aftertaste quite clean but slightly sweet. Another well made brew from Southampton.

It pours-out a light copper with thin white head and some lacing. Planty aroma of hops, grass, limes and citrus, caramel malts, and rich spices. The mouthfeel is smooth, rich, and full-bodied; a bit zesty. Flavors of caramel malts, hops, grapefruit, and peppers/spice. Nice!

Bronze color and pours with a thick khacki head. Aroma, not much there, a little malty with hop and caramel undertones. Flavors are more malty than I’d like from an IPA but that was expected. Roasty caramel, toffee, dough, complimenting bitter hops. Really, this is a pretty good beer, just not what I generally look for in an IPA.

A very respectable IPA, the bottle says its a combo of English and west coast IPA's, and that is a very accurate description. Although it has good balance it leans a bit more to the caramel malts but there is an active, but not overwhelming hop presence. Overall a good solid beer, thats worth a try.

Sampled from bottle. Pours clear copper with a creamy off-white head and remarkable lacing. The aroma is malt-dominant. Maybe Munich malt. Balanced flavor with some peppery, floral hop presence. Medium-bodied and smooth. Read the brewer's description of this beer. Phil is a beer-historian of sorts and I love his work. This beer is as advertised, it's just not my type of IPA. A good beer nonetheless!

Pours murky copper with small head and nice lacing. Aroma is richly malty with light, piney topnotes. The flavor has a sweet, hearty malt base balanced by citrus and evergreen bitterness. Medium bodied and a little thick, perhaps more carbonation would have helped on the mouthfeel category. Not a bad sample, but easily the weakest showing of the Southamptons I have tried.

This isn't a bad beer. It's just not a good IPA. Where are the hops? The label states it's hops are balanced. It's more like they are absent. How can you make an IPA without hops? It's like making a stout beer without roasted grain and saying, "this is a good stout without all that darkness and roasted grain flavor." That being said, the appearance is good enough... amber with a thick white head. The taste is malty with a peculiar absence of hops. Mouthfeel is OK. Overall, the only good thing about this beer is the price.

A yellow beer with a fine head. The aroma is very grassy and hoppy, while the flavor is fresh and hoppy - even with notes of the hop oils. The mouthfeel is very smooth.
