2018 Description Blacksmith Smoked Porter is HIghlander’s dark secret. This high-quality porter blends notes of dark-roast coffee, chocolate and peat for a smooth, delicious taste and finish. The complexity of our English smoked porter style beer comes from the careful selection of its dark malts. The smooth texture and long finish - without the usual bitter aftertaste of a dark - make this a symphony of coffee, caramel and chocolate flavours that isn’t rich or overpowering. The creamy, tan head right out of the bottle is reminiscent of a properly poured draft beer. 2013 Description 'Dark full body porter. Black patent malt and subtle hints of dark chocolate. Wonderful nose with hints of beech smoke, and a refreshing finish.

I hate it when a company advertises their beer as something and then doesn’t deliver. Fortunately for Highlander, they delivered all the elements they described in this beer, and they did it well, surprisingly considering the brewer. The beer pours a solid black with brown edges where it meets the glass. The cap is brown, and creamy, and lasts a few minutes. The aroma definitely has a smokiness to it, as well as plums, molasses, vanilla, and roasted malt. The smokiness also has a presence in the flavour, but gives way to sweet malt notes such as caramel and molasses.

Pours a thick frothy creamy head that goes away after a while and leaves a thin layer. Weak enough lacing. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Flavours are quite smokey, with notes of dark roasted malts, coffee. Medium retention. Slight warming sensation. Slick and oily mouthfeel.

Without looking at the label I would think I was drinking a Scottish Ale. Sweet malt in the aroma and flavour and a hint of smoke in both. Medium mouthfeel

Single big bottle from the LCBO. Pours a dark brown colour with some red highlights. The big head is creamy, beige, very long lasting and has creamy-patchy lacing. The smokey roasted malts are present in the aromas, but not as strong as most smoked beers. Kind of more nutty with slight dark fruits. Same for the taste, with the nut notes coming from the yeast, making the flavours yeasty over the smokiness. Not bad, but lacking smokey malts and a little too much yeast.

The beer pours a coca-cola colour with a thin tan coloured rocky cap which lasts. The aroma is smoked wood, molasses and hints of licorice. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is sweet malt, molasses, and smoke. Quite drinkable for 6.5% -

On tap @ bent Elbow - a dark opaque brown-black ale with a small tight mocha colored cap. Aroma is pleasant - coffee, fruity, some grassiness and just a subtle hint of smoke. Full bodied for a porter robust roasty fruity character. Flavour follows aroma - rich roasty maltiness with a dark fruity undertone and just a hint of smoke , hops appear mid palate and add light bitterness which carries into the long roasty finish with a touch of sweetness at the end... a tad underdeveloped as all the flavors are discrete - with more time this would be a well rounded robust porter.
