Pours clear golden with a thin eggshell head, but the latter is an artifact of the pour. Aroma has a hoppy note, not much else. Hops really come out in the flavor, along with citrus and subtle malty tones. Mouthfeel presents firm body and strong fizz. Starts weak, finishes strong - and has a punch.

Pours a murky orange body with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small spots of lace are left around the glass. Smell is of citrus zest, and grapefruit juice. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, grapefruit, and pine needle, there is an astringent kick thats a real turn off though. Medium body with a decent hop bite. Overall the astrigency aspect really killed a promising beer.

A very cloudy orange pour with a smallish white head. Not the freshest (bottled in July) but still plenty of citrus and pine in the aroma along with a little caramel malt. Slightly sweet taste initially (could be the hops faded a little) but finishes very bitter. Alcohol is well hidden but leaves me feeling nice and warm by the end. Great DIPA and one I will look for again (fresher if possible).

wish list beer, bottled in August. Tons of hops and tons of bitterness in this one, to the point they keep this beer from being better. the slightly sweet pineapple aroma and flavor are relagated to the background by the intense bitterness. decent, but i'd like to taste the beer juuust a tad more. 2nd/3rd time around - not really aging well, even though it doesn't have much age on it. overrated in the high 90's...probably done with this beer after the 4-pack. the weird bitterness just a bot off putting, and i like unapologetic bitter beers.

This was an unexpected surprise from a friend who knew I liked beer. I like this one a lot. A hazy pour, thin head, golden-orange in colour. Hops are ever present in the aroma with some caramel malts. The taste is citrus all the way through with a nice balance of the caramel malts.

A cloudy orange colored beer with a big frothy textured white head rises above. Some hang time, settling into a highly impressive lacing of film on side of glass and ringlet/cap atop the body. Sedimentation will appear at the bottom of my glass. The aroma and tasting are hops, citrus, grass, floral and pine all covering the spectrum. Nigh summer quencher in a crisp medium, carbonated, medium bodied ale.

This beer was quite tasty and exactly what I would expect from Smuttynose. This was a really BIG IPA - it was mainly piney hops with notes of floral and citrus hops hiding in the nuance of the beer. While I really enjoyed this beer, I would take Smuttynose's Finest Kind IPA over the BIG A IPA. As a side note, both Finest Kind and BIG A IPA are unfiltered IPAs - I love this as it adds a dirty character to the beer - it makes them nice and gritty. You can scrape the hops off your teeth an hour after having one of these beers.

I’m from NH and I know I’ve had this before but I never rated it. So here goes. This bottle is from Knightly Spirits (an amazing one stop beer/liquor/wine store I might add... they can thank me later for the plug :-). Golden colored and pours with a thick off-white head with solid lacing sticking like glue. The aroma is grapefruit, orange peel and a little lemon zest. My first thoughts were that this smelled like it could come from the west coast, which is a good thing. The flavors are heavy on the grapefruit and citrus with some resinous hops showing too. A tropical fruit sweetness is sticky and strong in the finish of the beer and I think is a shade overdone (small complaint). Moderate bitterness for what it is with a tangy sting but it’s still really drinkable. Malts are there for support but the hops are big in this one. A really good beer here from Smutty

Another nice one from the Smutties. Pour was dark orange, nice head and lacing. Weakish aroma of grapefruit. Flavor was grapefruit, sweet malt, some orange. Mild hoppiness, but well balanced. Full mouthfeel. Good beer.

NorCal tasting Jan 07 - This is an IIPA? Nose is caramel, some grapefruity hops. Nothing on overload, though it would be a good IPA. Appearance is copper in color, off-white head. Flavors were really malty sweet, caramel combined with some grapefruity hops. This was good. Not sure if it was IIPA good, but still good nonetheless. Perhaps this was an older bottle?
