330 ml from Central City. Misty dark brown pour with a substantial creamy beige head. Lots of spices, yeast, and dark fruit - raisin, mostly, for the nose. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Sweet malt flavour, along with dark fruit. Well-balanced.

330 ml bottle, as Slaapmutske Christmas, at the Christmas beer tasting of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Beautiful dark reddish brown colour, huge, creamy and long lasting off-white to beige head. Both aroma and flavour have a distinctly malty presence (not too sweet though) with some mild spicy, fruity and caramel notes, the hops are moderate - but the beer is overall so well balanced and highly drinkable that it deserves a high rating, even without being so very "special", nor extreme in any way.

Part of a conglomeration of Belgian beers for the yuletide in a box entitled "Christmas in Belgium" that I picked up at Bado's Ale House during the festive season. Nightcap has a huge fluffy latte head retaining excellent foam on top of a musty brown body. Huge yeast aromas waft from the chalice, telling the drinker that this one is going to be strong! The scent of sweet cream also was noticeable once it settled a bit after a swirl of the glass. Mild prune, brown sugar and caramel notes are detectable on the buds, with a heavy alcoholic finish. There were no spice notes or complexities that you would otherwise have for a holiday brew. Reminded me of St. Bernardus Abt 12, only a little bit stronger (if you can believe that!). Overall, I'd say Nightcap is a thick and rich delectable Belgian brew, but I have to wonder, is it a beer for Christmas?

one round up of this beer termed the finish like sour milk...pretty sad that i can see where he was coming from. It's got a couple good flavor things going for it, but in end, isn't very good or pleasant. this was the 5th of 5 beers in the "Chritmas Beers of Belgium" gift pack. I must say, it was a monumental disappointment. All 5 beers were between 2.5-3.4 I think, with this one right in the middle. The best was barely above average, and none are beers I'd get again. This one pours amber with a tan head. sampled 2/09...best by 8/09, so like the others i think it's been around for a while. more brown sludge on the inner rim. smells and tastes of fruit, slight vegetal notes, and some spice and malt. tastes the same, with slight unpleasant sourness. almost a nice belgian brown, but something is just...off. acidic. a below average beer, belgian or not.

This poured an amber color with a beige head. The aroma contains some cooked veggies, chocolate, and toffee. The flavor has a nutty presence with some coffee, dark chocolate, and spices. Overall a pretty nice beer.

A careful pour produces a slightly brown tinged, tan colored, five-finger thick head that exceeds the rim of the glass by about one-finger in height. The beer looks quite black as it sits in my glass, but when held up to the light shows a brilliantly clear, deeply red stained, dark plum color. Quite fruity smelling, with concentrated notes of raisins, figs, prunes and dried berries all easily noticed as is a touch of molasses and rum like dark candi sugar. Complimentary spice notes of clove, a hint of ginger, woody black pepper, allspice and fenugreek. Malt aromatics contribute notes of dusty, concentrated-caramel influenced, crushed grain, toasty malt and an almost dry grain-like maltiness in the finish. A bit of higher alcohols contribute to some slight warming and some ester-derived yeast character contributes aromas of bananas and aromatic-varietal apples. These esters and higher alcohols also contribute notes that smell like a rich, well aged, concentrated-molasses heavy Rum.
Sweet, though not cloying, this contributes to a substantial fruitiness that leans heavily towards the prune side of the spectrum. The finish almost has a slight, rancid fruit character to it, in fact this definitely lingers on in the finish quite a bit and makes me think of infected prune juice or slightly rancid vegetables. This tastes a bit like Dr. Pepper with its yeast derived spice notes and the fruit character. A medium full mouthfeel contributes to a palate clinging character that is ultimately both good and bad (i.e. both the good and bad flavors cling to the palate). Slightly tart, think tamarind or plums, this helps to lighten this beer up just a bit.
At times the off after-taste can be quite overwhelmingly bad, but at others this beer is almost quite palatable. In the end though, the off fruit note is noticed in both the aroma and especially the taste, it make this beer just a little bit too off for my tastes.

A pretty plain tasting beer, which really doesn't offer much in terms of complexity. Plus the cost is quite high, so that's a bummer as well. The beer pours out a dark brown, nearly black color with a large rocky light tan head. The bubbles are really large on the top and get smaller towards the bottom. It gave me the impression that I just poured some kind of cola soft-drink. Aroma is very sublte. Almost TOO subtle. Light notes of dark fruits and clove. Mouthfeel is decent enough, a higher level of carbonation but that's expected from a Belgian. Flavors are also, very very subtle. Dark fruits, cloves and a touch spicy. Nothing special about this beer.
