The traditional elements of classic English IPA have been redefined by American craft beer innovation. Like the image suggests, Monkey Fist is edgy, aggressive, and unique in style. This beer is brilliant copper in color and exploding with Warrior, Glacier and Cascade hop character but able to maintain a beautiful balance. Monkey Fist: a knot tied at the end of a sailor’s rope to serve as a weight and make it easier to throw. Malt: Pale Ale, Malted Wheat, Munich, Crystal, Caramalt Hops: Warrior, Glacier, Cascade Yeast: Top-Fermenting English Color: Copper OG: 1.064 ABV: 6.9% First Brewed: February 2012 Availability: Year Round Available: 12oz Bottles, 22oz Bottles Keg

I had this beer at Billy's in Roanoke, VA. This beer was slightly better than average. Dark orange in color, smelled some citrus but it wasn't very notable in the flavor. Not overly big.

The beer pours a translucent burnt orange with a light tan coloured head. The aroma is grapefruit, pine, and caramel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average mouthfeel. The flavour is caramel, grapefruit, and pine -

Can from the LCBO. Pours a hazy golden-amber colour with a big frothy light-beige head, good retention and lots of creamy-foam lacing. Grassy-orange smell from the hops, with hints of caramel malts and tropical fruits. Some bitterness in the mouth, but the wetness balance things. Again, the hop in the taste is not on the fresh side (Cascade), but heavier on the greener grass. Notes of citrus, roasted malts and apples. Well-brewed for the style, but myself, not a huge fan of this hop combination.

pours a clouded orangy-copper with a puffy 2 finger off white cap. Aroma is hoptacular... pine, grapefruit, earthy fruits, over a stiff caramel malt tone. Flavour follows aroma with the big fruity-citrus-piney hops slightly over balancing a thick car-malt base - whole thing goes dry and increasingly bitter in the finish with a puckering bitter kiss at the finale - a great quaffing PNW IPA

Tallboy from LCBO. Pours a huge frothy eggshell white head and has a cloudy, amber appearance. Leaves nice thick dirty lacing. Aromas of floral and citrus hops as well as herbs and resin hop. Lightly spiced. Flavours of oranges, citrus hops, coriander and malted barley. Some notes of breads and grains, but just a touch. Nice tingling sensation, slightly astringent. Good balance of bitterness and sweetness. Pretty good IPA, nothing that really sets it apart from all the others though.

Strong aroma is very hoppy and has a sharp resiny undertone. It pours a clear honey-amber with a fairly thick and persistent buff head. Sassy flavor has a strong hoppy core on which it drapes resin, bitter wood and malt notes. Smooth, firm, lively texture rounds out a very pleasing brew. Go ahead, monkey with it!

I guess this is a new one. Bought at the Shipyard Brewpub in Winter Park, FL in a mix-and-match 6-pack. Stronger and hoppier than the Fuggles IPA. With so many IPAs out there now, brewers need to step up in order to compete...this actually is one of Shipyards best standard beers. Not in the upper tier by any means, but better than the weaker average "middle of the road" IPAs. I still prefer something like Lagunitas, Stone, or Sierra Nevada in this style (although this is quite comparable to Torpedo) ....but if those can't be found or this is the best choice at an airport brewpub, I would gladly accept.

A crystalline orange-amber colored beer with a big frothy textured, orange tinged off white head rising robustly above. Good hang time. Settles eventally into thick fluffs atop the body. Strong citric-orange-resiny nose. Same profile in tasting with a tad pine added, which is probably where the resin in the nose came from. Moderate body, effervescent.
