SHINER MARKS ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A BOLD NEW TASTE In 1909, German and Czech immigrants decided to start the Homebrewing Association in Shiner, Texas so they could make the kind of beers they’d left behind in their homelands. With the arrival of Bavarian-born and classically trained brewmaster Kosmos Spoetzl in 1915, the brewery was on the way to becoming one of the country’s most respected craft brewers. To mark this important milestone not just for the brewery but for American beer making, we have literally bottled our history and heritage in a new brew to celebrate the centennial of Shiner Beers and the Spoetzl Brewery. Shiner 100 Commemorator is a rich and robust brew that is a fitting tribute to our legacy of 100 years of handcrafting stylish and flavorful beers. Commemorator is a bold style that would have been very familiar to Kosmos. One of the highlights of the Bavarian brewing year is the rollout of strong beer or starkbier, developed by monks as “liquid bread” to sustain them through the Lenten season. Commemorator is brewed in that Old-World tradition and embodies the German-Czech heritage Shiner has proudly stood for since 1909. This 17 % original extract dark lager is a blend of two row Munich and Caramel 60 malt mildly spiced with Bavarian Hallertau Tradition and Spalter Select hops to allow the toasted caramel flavor to predominate. Shiner 100 Commemorator will be available in select markets on January 1. Like all Shiner beers, every drop of Commemorator is made by only 56 employees of the Spoetzl Brewery make, very near the site where it all started a century ago. Not a bad dopplebock. Dark caramel deep copper color that pours a nice tan head that disipates to light lacing that clings nicely. The aroma is to my liking, malty and sweet. The flavor is much the same, heavily malted and sweet caramel flavors come through. There is a slight hint of fruit in there as well. I am perplexed by a slight bitterness on the finish that I did not expect. Not unpleasant, but unexpected. All in all not a bad beer. But I like Shiner Bock too.

This was not a bad beer but when it comes to anniversary beers I just expect to be knocked off my feet. THis beer had a nice amber color and it had a toasted malt/ sweet smell and the taste was much of the same with a slight metallic taste.

An honest good dopplebock. Pours a nice copper with a medium head and excellent lacing. Just a tad on the sweet side for my taste, but a really good beer none-the-less.

This brew poured a crystal clear copper color with a decent head. The aroma was sweet nut/toffee malt and scant hop. Flavor is sweet malt and just a hint of hops. Mouthfeel is medium. Decent dopplebock.

The aroma is malty and sweet and sugary with maybe some strange fruity aromas coming through as well as some caramel. The appearance is a dark, rich amber to burgundy in color when held to the light with a full head on top that is light-tan in color and dissipates to a light lacing. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with some astringency noticeable and lacks complexity a true doppel bock has and the palate is too light and thin as well. The flavor is malty, sweet, and sugary with an aftertaste that is of dark fruit and caramel as well as creamy chocolate with a finish that is a bit sloppy overall. Overall, not a doppel bock here in my opinion being that you can see right through this one and is more along the line of an American porter like Anchor Porter or more of a brown ale.

Sampled on 4/17.2009. This dopplebock pours a reddish gold color from a 12oz bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head, with decent lacing. The aroma is cereal, caramel and sweet. A medium bodied dopplebock. The malts are caramel and sweet, touch of grain. The hops are earthy. This beer kind of reminds me of a ramped up version of Shiner Dock. It also seems to be a little bit under carbonated. The malts aren’t very sweet for a dopplebock, it’s missing a big malt backbone so it is very underwhelming. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

look is typical for a DB, maybe a touch lite. Aroma is pleasant malty sweetness, if also a bit light. flavor and feel are good enough as well. didn;t stand out enough to be sure it was a DB and not just any dark german lager, or in other words, a little lite. Sensing a theme here? A totally quafable beer thaT DOES NOTHING TO STAND OUT, GOOD OR BAD.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass, had a frothy head of a little over an inch, which diminished in a minute or two to a light film of top-foam. Color is a deep copper, and very clear. A few drinks into the pint, lacing faded rapidly. First nose was on the sweet side, very faint mocha overtone. First sip wasn't as sweet as I'd expected, with a little hop tang to it. Not much hop tang (as the low IBU would suggest) but definitely there. Nicely balanced, very drinkable overall. Would I buy it again? In today's market, where there are thousands of incredible microbrews readily available, probably not. In a more limited situation, like having to grab something from a grocery store on the way, sure! Any brewery that lives to be 100 years old deserves a little love, and a sixer of this Commemorator is a fine way to show it!

This was an interesting dopplebock. It had a lighter mouth feel than I expected. I tasted hints of vanilla followed by nuttiness. Sweeter than expected but good overall.

Pours light brown with perfect clarity and a small, scattered head. Sweet toffee dominates the aroma with nutty notes lending complexity and balance. Flavor is just on the sweet side, but nearly balanced. Lots of different malts playing a role. Medium bodied and smooth. Nice anniversary showing by Shiner.
