Our original Rogue Ale, Younger's Special Bitter (affectionately nicknamed YSB) is a classic English Special Bitter named after Bill Younger of the infamous Horse Brass Pub in Portland, Oregon. The Malt Advocate described Younger's Special Bitter as "rich and flavorful. A triad of caramel maltiness, fruitiness (apricots?), and hop bitterness in aroma and flavor. A fuller malt foundation than some other pale ales, with some background spiciness. Dry, hoppy finish." In the SouthWest Brewing News, Feb/March 1994 issue, George Fix wrote "A strong case could be made for Rogue Ale being included among the top 5 ales brewed in the US." YSB is amber in color with a mild hoppy finish. Brewed with a blend of 2-row Harrington and Crystal malts, Willamette and East Kent Golding hops. YSB is available in the classic 22-ounce seriograph bottle (the 12-ounce 6-pack is being phased out in early 2005), and on draft. Measurements: 12 Degrees Plato, IBU 35, Apparent attenuation 75, Lovibond 17.

This beer pours a dark amber color with a decent head that laces nicely. The smell is sweet with a nice bit of hops in the background. The taste is more of the same with a sweet maltiness and a hoppy bitter kick at the end.

Mildly hazy orangey-brown body caped with a tall brown crown. Notable hops in the nose, some sweetness that’s about it. Doesn’t smell bad at all just so dam mild. Sweet malty taste with a mild bitter finish. Some watermelon, mild coffee, wood, nuts, and nice hop presence that’s not over done like a lot of Rogue beers. Beer is over all clean tasting but there is a touch of a metallic after taste. Good brew would drink again.

nice, highly drinkable. smells of malty backbone with just enough chewy hops thrown in for balance. nice finish. better than brutal bitter most of the time.

Nothing special here aside from the fact that Rogue has not over hopped a beer for once. Poured out a small white, foamy head with some light lacing on top of a burnt orange beer. The aroma is a good mix of caramel and biscuit malts, sweet orange, weak melon, slightest hint of spice and floral hops. Pretty tasty stuff with the caramel / biscuit blend, orange, leafy hops, a bit of spice - pretty good overall but nothing too special. Still, I can see getting more cause this shit is so damn easy to consume! Fine carbonation, closes in on medium bodied, dry mouth feel, some bitter finish with a touch of orangy sweetness that lingers.

A decent beer from Rogue. Fairly simple example of the ESB style. Typical for Rogue though, with a good dose of hops in both the aroma and palate. The beer pours out a dark orange color, a simple off-white foamy cap with aromas that was a peppery/spicy hop and malt combo which was different, but nice. Flavors had some light sweet malt combo, a bit undefineable though. Perhaps it was some caramel malts? I think the beer had some age on it, which might have contributed to the marked lack of definition. Citrus and floral hop notes also showed up in the flavor.

I don't know if this should be listed seperately, as Rogue did a special bottleing in black or white old style bottles for the 30th anniversary of Younger owning the Horse Brass pub. I believe only something like 1000 bottles were done in each color. Now is VERY hard to find. I got the LAST white bottle at Belmont Station, the biggest beer store in Portland today. They had only 4 black bottles left! No different in taste from the "regular" bottleing, but worth the extra $1 for the special bottle to collectors..

Its a bronzy color with a good head. Crossover English/PAc NW taste. Flavors of caramel malt, toasty hay, grapefruit. Flavorful taste with a contrasting light mellow finish and mild bitterness.... Mouthfeel is light with fine bubbles and very smooth and refreshing....Not so much extra or special but its a bitter

Bottle courtesy of Okbeer: Poured a medium brown color ale with a medium light brown head with better then average retention. Aroma of English hops is dominating with nice floral aspects. Taste is dominated by English hops and provides a lot of dryness. I thought the malt was a bit too discreet and some caramel malt would have brought some sweetness to balance the dryness form the hops. Body is quite full with some medium carbonation.

Fine beer. Pour was dark copper, thick foamy head and sweet lacing. Aroma was biscuity and citrus hops. Flavor was thick rich malt with a nice bitter hop twang at the end (of grapefruits, predominantly). Smooth mouthfeel, full flavor. Nice.
