We’ll bet you can remember your first glass of Sauvignon Blanc, all those racy, up-front fruit flavours and that bracing punch of acidity. Allow us to introduce the beer world’s equivalent from the home of the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc. Pioneered in the American state of California, American Pale Ale, or APA for short, was designed to showcase the unique resiny fruitiness of American hops. Here at Renaissance we have given this style a truly New Zealand flavour by using Cascade and Willamette hops that are grown over the hill in Nelson. This beer displays honeyed characters and the subtle hop flavours lead to a slightly sweet finish on the palate. As with all our beers, we believe that Discovery’s flavours can be enjoyed with food as well as on their own, we recommend that this beer matches well with the hot spiced dishes of the following cuisines: Mexican (well it was pioneered in California) South East Asian (Thai, Malay, Vietnamese, Indonesian) Indian We hope you enjoy!

Pours quite a large amount of foamy off-white head that stays a long time and has a golden appearance with light amber hues. Fairly excessive carbonation. Resin hop aromas with bitter earthy hop notes. Flavours are very malty with a dash of honey in the mix. Earthy and floral hops as well as spices. Makes for a somewhat odd mixture. Full bodied, lively carbonation. Has a slick drying sensation. Not bad but something just seems a little off. Can't pinpoint it.

Single at the LCBO with a neck label written, Silver Australian International Beer Awards 2010. Pours a slightly hazy golden-amber colour with a bubbly head that disappears quickly, but has a little lacing, here and there. The nose seems off-balanced, with some light hops at first which are good, but then, this big cereal puff comes up, and seems all over. A mix of caramel malts with dark fruits and other aromas that don't blend very well. The taste is pretty much the same. Maybe a got a bad bottle, but I am not a fan of this one.

At 4.5%, this is kind of weak for an APA, but I thought I would give it a try anyway. A dark gold pour, slightly cloudy, with a thin white cap fills the glass. The cascade hops are definitely noticeable in the aroma along with citrus and grassy malt. Flavour lacks the hoppish bite one comes to expect from a well made APA, but there are still enough notes of grapefruit and caramel to keep the imbiber interested.

500ml bottle - a hard pour puts a hazy burnished gold ale in the glass with a smallish white cap that does not last well. Aroma has a honey like tone over some nice fruity notes, some grassy hops. Flavour has fruits, toffeeish malts and herbal hopping in fairly tight balance, goes to a lightly dry finish where some citrusy hopping comes through then a sweet taste at the end. Not much like an APA but an interesting concoction.

The beer pours a hazed orange-gold colour, highly effervescent, with a huge white head that lingers. Aroma is juicy Pacific hops, some spices, and caramel malt. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is citrusy hops, some earthiness, and straw. Not bad, but I was expecting more.
