Dead Elephant Ale acknowledges the death of Jumbo, the world famous elephant that died in St.Thomas on September 15, 1885 by an unscheduled freight train. A full bodied golden Pale Ale which pours with a linen white medium density head leaving spider web lace on the glass. On the palate the flavour is sweet fruity malts up front (apricot, mango) with a bit of candy, and slight grassy notes which fall away to reveal a hint of biscuit with rather pleasant grapefruit and perfume undertones. This is a hop bomb, there is no doubt. To the nose there is a mild malt aroma which accentuates the robust floral bouquet which is derived from the hops. Medium full bodied ale with pleasant lingering hop finish. 6.8 % alcohol by volume, IBU's 46.6 Food Pairings: Burgers, Chilli, Chorizo, Crispy/Spicy Duck, Spicy Indian dishes

Draught. Colour – pale yellow gold with good effervescence and a half inch frothy white cap. Lacing is decent. Aroma – bready malt notes, citrus hops, weak pine notes, and toffee. Mouthfeel – medium bodied, over carbonated. Flavour – sweet bready malt, light notes of caramel, but not well balanced as the citrus hop finish is very weak.

Not one of Ontario’s better craft brewer’s but they’ve been around a while so somebody must like them. A slightly clouded pale gold, with a white head. The aroma has elements of pine, citrus, and grass. The flavour is mild citrus, and grass. Certainly not an in your face IPA, but serviceable.

Really there's not much to say about this one other if an IPA could be the perfect swill/sessioner, then this would be just that brew. Does have a nice amber appearance to it and the nose is out of this world, if you like that sort of thing, but other than that, it's pretty much run-of-the-mill.

Pours a very large amount of foamy off-white head. Medium amber colour. Ok lacing. Aroma of various malts and hops, grainy. Pretty strong hoppy taste with the usual citrus flavours standing out. Pretty good stuff.

Poured a clear golden colour with a large white head.Good retention and lacing.Aroma is floral and slightly smokey.Nice slick mouthfeel. Flavour starts well but for me its not well balanced. The finish is more than a perfume undertone.

The brewer's description says this is a hop bomb. Hoppy yes, hop bomb no. Golden-amber colour with a slight haziness from minuscule particles floating around (says "Not pasteurized" and to "keep refrigerated"). Its head is huge, off-white, frothy and foamy with great retention and a bit of lace. The hop is felt in the aromas with notes of caramel malt and a little alcohol warmth. Smooth oily mouthfeel with a small amount of dryness in the finish. Grapefruit citrus taste, pine and fruity malts complete the taste. Fresh apples come out in the aftertaste. Pretty good brew overall and more hoppy than most macros. Just not a hop bomb (at 47 IBU).

This really wasn't much of an IPA in my opinion. It was too clear, and the aroma too malty to match my expectations. Clear, gold, white head. Aroma was biscuity malt, and some (not a lot) floral hops. The flavour wasn't all that balanced either....still too malty.

I tried this beer on June 17, 2010 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a translucent golden colour, with reddish hues, and a 1/2 inch white cap. The aroma was citrusy hops, grainy malt, and pine. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was grapefruity hops, cereal malt, citrus, and a bitter finish

Growler procured from the brewery: Pours a lightly hazed deep amber ale in the glass with a 1 finger fine pored white cap. Modest cabonation good lacing qualities. Aroma is caramel malts over resinous-citrus hopping and a whiff of mustiness. Medium bodied, slick mouthfeel. Big toffee malts in front get blasted with resinous piney hops and fruity esters, I get the light smokey tone others talk of in the middle as this shows some small complexity of flavors mingling, then a long wet bittering finish. Warming but alcohol is well hidden. Hard to tell if this is an IPA as much as it is a big amber ale with character but it’s a decent enough effort from this brewer.
