A robust amber ale brewed with locally roasted, organic fair trade espresso. The espresso is a dark Sumatran blend, which adds a toasty character in the front palate. This plays nicely off the sweet malty flavors found on the back palate of this amber ale.

Pours a luscious, barely translucent chocolate brown; the way it was poured made judging the head impossible so I can’t comment on that aspect, though the beer left substantial lacing as I drank. Sweet quality coffee dominates the aroma, and there are hints of malt and smoke - it smells more like a good stout than an amber ale. Flavor is mainly quality roast coffee with a malty undertone. Texture is fairly smooth and fizzy. Though this is an amber ale, stout and porter lovers should enjoy it.

I see this beer has been getting some low ratings here. I like the pairing of coffee, chocolate and beer. A deep reddish colored beer. Big frothy textured, white head. Some hand time. But what is most impressive is the lacing. A large amount of film and a decent ringlet/cap sits atop the body. Coffee dominates in both the aroma and tasting. In the flavor though the malt, ever so light comes through nicely. Light bodied but with the smoothness of a coffee. Really not bad.

Not really a bad beer, actually it was pretty decent. Maybe just a tad decieving. The name led me on to thinking it would be a coffee beer of some sort, when in reality, it just has slight espresso notes and coffee grounds on the nose. Little bit darker of amber, brownish-reddish... Taste is light, creamy and not as full as I was expecting. A little whiskey i think in the aroma. Had two of these before bed, slept like a baby.

cheapdark (1816), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA 2 Aroma Appearance Flavor Palate Overall 5/10 3/5 3/10 2/5 7/20 Apr 20, 2009 12 oz brown bottle with a twist off cap. Off or somewhat coffee aroma with a ropey olfactory. Looks like ice tea. Very strong black coffee initial bitter impact. I looked back at the label thinking the flavor was like many coffee stouts I’ve had; imperial and other. Taste overwhelms most indications of carbonation, rather oily. Next slug is big bad coffee again. Session builds to a medium strong bitter lingering old coffee finish that sticks to the back of your mouth. Wew, now I am awake!!
