Maz, formerly known as Mazarin, is my take on a “thinker’s beer”. Rather than being big and undecipherably complex I wanted to create something that would calm a hop yearning nerve without fuddling the brain too much. In other words, a lavishly hopped ale of judicious ABV — an Extra Special Pale Ale if you will. In fact, so extra special that it snatched a gold medal at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival in 2013. In november 2014 we doubled the hop bill.

Now called simply Maz, pouring a hazy golden-orange colour with a frothy white cap, average retention and leaving some foamy lacing patches. Orange aromas and other citrus notes, yeast. The taste is citrusy as well with hints of spiciness, but smooth overall. The oats are very mild in here, so not as juicy, but the dry mouthfeel is building. A nice Pale ale with some juiciness, but mostly dryness.

330 ml bottle, at Christianssand Brygghus. ABV is 5.6%. Deep golden colour, large white head. Pleasant aroma and flavour, fruity and spicy hops, on a background of toffee and malts. A bit on the sweet side, but not too much. Might well buy again.

Bold aroma is malty and fruity with hay, yeasty and floral hints. Pours a clear, bubbly amber with a thick and fluffy ivory head. Flavor is quite hoppy, almost more an IPA than a "regular" PA, with hay and woody tones, a fair amount of bitterness, and floral and fruity hints. Texture is quite fizzy, though not remarkably thick; goes down nicely. A gold medal winner? Not surprised!
