This is an amber red beer that was designed by the monks for their 150th anniversary. Profits from the sales go to St. Johns prep school. This beer is brewed with a complex addition of specialty malts. Consisting of Caramelized Barley, which is barley that has been caramelized in sugars from converted barley starch, Roasted Barley that is roasted under direct heat, and. Flaked Wheat which adds body and flavor. The barley is brewed using a temperature controlled step mash. In doing this we utilize the proteins and enzymes necessary to convert sugars for fermentation. This combination of malt is where the amber red color comes from. Olde Johnnie Ales bitterness comes from a large hop addition of fuggles at the beginning of the boil. The fuggles variety are known to be mild and pleasant. At the end of the boil tettnang hops are added for aroma. Tettnang variety is traditionally used in Germany and is well established in the United States and known for its fine aromas. The water for this beer comes from a fresh water aquifer which is some of the best water in the world for brewing beer. Nothing is added to the water, it has all of the minerals necessary to brew great beer.

eh...not too impressed with this double pint. kinda low class amber here...cloudy amber color, non-offensive malty nutty flavor and aroma, but pretty generic and simple.

I've had the pale ale pub pint and thought it was okay. This, however, was a little disappointing. Pours a dark amber with thin tan head. Aroma is of bitter hops (unfortunately not the citrusy variety I prefer) and roasted malt but also a hint of metal in there. Taste is nothing special either--very forgettable.
