One of Olde Hickory Brewery’s latest creations- Black Raven- is a black IPA. Roasted malts give this beer its dark color & rich flavor. But make no mistake, this is still an IPA, with a massive amount of hops selected to balance the roasted malt character & add bitterness & flavor.

    Aroma: 9 | Appearance: 8 | Mouthfeel: 8 | Flavor: 9 | Overall: 9

Strong aroma is hoppy with a firm yeasty undertone, a hint of fruit, and a smoky whisper. It pours an opaque chocolate brown with a thick and rather persistent light tan head. Flavor is downright lip-smacking - hoppy and smoky, having notes of grass, citrus, burnt wood and coffee with just a hint of caramel and - could that be molasses? Smooth texture has above-average body and a good amount of fizz.

The appearance on this one was black with a beige head. The aroma contained some chocolate, coffee, lemons, and grapefruit. The citrus dominates the flavor more than the stout qualities so. Some orange and grapefruit and coffee in the background. Overall pretty good but I’m almost over the whole Black IPA fad.
