As the Colorado hop growers prove they can produce world class hops, we as a Colorado Craft Brewer want to showcase what our state can offer, not only with our hand crafted beers, but also with the ingredients used in creating them. Mountain Standard, Double Black IPA, features the homegrown hops our Brewers helped pick from farms along Colorado’s western slope. MST pours committingly dark with a light tan head and a slightly roasted hoppy nose. An ephemeral bitterness, the result of combining roasted malts with an assertive American hop profile, contributes to MST’s act of balance and harmony. As the season’s darkness sets in, why shouldn’t your beer become darker too?

Sampled on 10/1/2012 at Odells Brewery. This Black IPA pours a dark brown color from the tap. Medium sized beige foamy head. The aroma is roasted malts and citrusy hops. A medium bodied Black IPA. The malts are fruity, roasty and sweet. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. Seems a little sweet for a black IPA, but it works. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with some lingering hop bitterness.

12 ouncer from a 4-pack. after Stone SSR and 15th AV, I don't think any other black ipa hangs with this bad boy. had it before bringing in the chrostmas tree...and they smelled the same! well, maybe a little more roast in the beer, but you get the idea. the hops used blended expertly with the dark malt to create a rich, piney brew, with roasted barley, licorice, chocolate, and an overall feeling of joy towards fellow man in the background. Similar to Deschutes Hop in the Dark but bigger. DEElicious. Between a 4.3 and a 4.4! Tasted damn fresh too!

750ml bottle. Wow are Odell corks tight! Pours dark brown/black with a monstrous creamy light brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, some black licorice, and resiny piney tarry hops.

The flavor is roasted malts with a little sweetness and a good amount of fruity, medium bitter, hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a very solid, well balanced, brew. Nothing over the top, but very drinkable. The alcohol is well hidden but the warming sneaks up on you.
