It's been a while since I had a porter (had, not "had") THis is nice! Dark, opaque pour with a mocha head that leaves some lace . Coffee is predominate, and some sweet blackstrap following politely behind. The alcohol balances the sweetness, which is a very good thing. After a caramel doppel I recently tried, I dont think I can ever stomach too much sweetness in a beer again. THis is a nice warming porter that I intend to keep on hand for those cold winter nights.

Bottled@Björntasting. Extremely dark rubyish black colour with mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is ashes, fruits, smoked wet wood and some dark fruits as well. Flavour is rather similar. Well done Porter from Germany.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of black chocolate and light roasted malt is quite enjoyable. Taste is a nice enough mix between some black chocolate with light dry roasted malt with lingering sweetness at the end. Body is fuller then average with good carbonation and no signs of alcohol. Not overly complex but well done and easily drinkable.

The aroma of this beer is of raisins and molasses. It's lightly carbonated with a thin head. Malt, sweet, it has quite a lot of raisin flavor in it.

Not doing it for me. The pour was dark brown to black, some ruby / mahoganey edges and hues. Weak initial head, near to nil lacing. The aroma was raisins, vinous, light coffee aromas. Flavor was dark fruits, raisins in particular, chocolate and coffee, molasses, lots of burnt but unfermented sugars (in an ick sort of way), and some milk stout type character too. Not a good blend of flavors, although a lot going on. Mouthfeel was moderate with a light acidity. Blah.

Last year, I order a version of this bier, billed as a Stark Swarzbier. IT was damn good! Best black bier I ever drank, period. One thing I noted, to myself at least, was it was very porter like. When the latest batch arrived, I was suprided to find a 7.2% Porter! The bier is BLACK, with a rock brown head. Aroma is a little "glycerine" like. The flavor is some place between roasty malt, but no burnt flavors, with a hint of lichorish. A very robust body, with a dry finish. Neuzeller produces some of the oddest brews I have drank in Germany. From the gag a maggot Black Abbot, through their "odd bocks", and now a Grand version of Porter. Good news is shipped to my door across the country, 40.25 US for 30 half liters. As always, no telling what it will be like once it hits the US shores, here Neuzeller Kloster is trying hard to keep a local tradition alive and its working just fine. Great with stink cheese and 'matters.
