Sassy Red began life as a Shed 22 brew, winning awards and enjoying a loyal Wellington following. Shed 22 Brewing Company brewed four different beers and is located on the Wellington waterfront overlooking the harbour – a spectacular site for a brewery. On the 1st of March 2005 the Shed 22 Brewing Company beers including Sassy Red were amalgamated under the Mac’s brand. This was a huge pat on the back for the Wellington team who had created these award winning brews. With Mac’s on board it provided the opportunity to take these award winning brews to the rest of the nation, and Mac’s Sassy Red is the first. This beer is a truly collaborative affair with Mac’s Sassy Red continuing to be brewed in Wellington and then transported over to Nelson for maturation and packaging – a real joint effort. Mac’s Sassy Red is available from the 1st of April 2005 and is the first 2005 national limited release. We would describe Mac’s Sassy Red as a taste sensation, full of complex flavours while exhibiting perfect balance. It all starts with the aroma; Colin Paige our Wellington head brewer describes it as “sticking your head in a hop sack”. Upon taking your first mouthful you will notice the combination of flavours including nutty, biscuity characters from the 5 malts, fruity esters and the contrasting flavour of the NZ Saaz hops. These flavours meld together resulting in this intriguing and balanced beer.
