High fermentation beer, this is brown and brewed with chocolate malt and smoked malt. The chocolate malts give it a very dark color and an intense sweet flavor. Before the 1800s, almost all ales were made from smoked malt, which lost its place to the pale malt in the late 1800s. But many brown ales and porters continued to use smoked until the 1950s. Smoked malt used in this beer is produced by craftsmen on the island of Gotland in Sweden, who used smoke-dried birch which gives the beer a distinctive flavor and smokiness. You can learn more about the island of Gotland and malt in the book by Michael Jackson, The Island of Gotland and Its Ancient Beers.

500 ml capped bottle, from the first batch as " Les Ours " before becoming its final name " Les Corbeaux ". Poured an unfiltered and opaque dark-brown, close to black, coloured Smoked Ale with a one finger tan foamy head that had a short retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. No lacing. A lot of floating sediments. The aroma is smoked malts, wet leather, woods and coffeish tones. The flavour is deep smoked malts, peat, cold coffee beans, fruity, apples, ashes. The mouthfeel is crispy, sparkling, quite thick and smoked. This light bodied Smoked Ale has a dry smoked malts finish. This first batch of the now called Les Corbeaux is a nice discovery and presents undeniable real qualities. For a newcomer, as Brasserie de l'Ile d'Yeu is, to dare brewing such a specific Smoked Ale deserves a great respect.
