This extra-strong black lager has an aroma of chocolate and alcohol. Luxuriously round, its' flavours span from those of a mochaccino, to nuts and toffee with a hint of cherry wood smoked malt. A mild bitterness wraps up every sip.

July 2016: RBESG 2016 in Barcelona. On tap at NaparBCN. Nearly black colour. Sweetish aroma of malts and molasses. The molasses flavour was WAY too sweet for me - at least in a setting like this, a multiple beers tasting.

Shared bottle. Brownish black pour, tight tall head, nice lacing. Big rich roasted malty aroma and flavor, burnt molasses, hint of black coffee, very slight anise, light smoke and leather, nice ending bitter and linger. Just a big ass fabulous beer. "Oh Canada!"

GEEZ! This must be one of Canadas greatest breweries by now... Got it at Central City in Surrey. Opaque black in a small stella glass. Beige head, small bubbles, reduces to a thin cover, but still a cover in a minute. Some lacing. Immediate christmas cake style sweetness on the nose and flavour, cranberries and oats and syrup. Medium bodied, slightly prickly yeast. Some slight cigarette smoke and bitter coffee. You can tell its a big beer and 10%. Its too hot where I live for this stuff I think, but its a cool evening and its hitting the spot. Notice some prunes and dates and figs too. Thick and almost slightly creamy. Track on the stereo is "Gravitys Rainbow" by Klaxons. Like it.

Not sure where I bought this one, but has been in my cellar a while. "Édition Limitée, Automne 2008" written instead of "Grand Cuvée". Pours a real dark colour with little red highlights. The head is beige-brown coloured, decent sized, frothy, has good retention and leaves a bit of lace. The aromas are strong with some plums, raisins, coffee, molasses and hints of chocolate. Beautiful silky smooth and even a little creamy mouthfeel with absolutely no burning. You can really taste the roasted malts in the flavours, giving that burnt smokiness that lingers. A very nice light bitterness holds up, with the coffee and chocolate. Notes of cherries are very well-hidden as well. Quite happy I have held on to this one, but will have to try a more up-to-date version to see if it is as smooth and easy to drink. Would of never known this was a 10% ABV brew if it was not written.

this brewery always intrigues me... pours a deep ruby brown .. . instant coffee, light tar, roasty charcoal, and light bitterness .. . enjoyable, but i wanted at least some kind of smoke .. . . When, boy? When, ..are you gonna get your act together?

I tried this beer on October 22, 2011 after purchasing from the Yonge/Wellesley LCBO in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a dark brownish-black colour with a thin long lasting tan coloured head. Coffee, smoke, chocolate and figs dominated the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is smoked wood, chocolate, cherries and hints of chocolate and vanilla.
