Hoping to make the last run of the season, Captain George Burkit, a seasoned Great Lakes sailor, left Collingwood harbour for Parry Sound on November 21, 1879 in command of the PS Waubuno. Her name was derived from Algonquin meaning "Sorcerer". The Waubuno, a side wheeler, was laden with passengers and freight including two tons of barreled whiskey stowed on the deck. The Waubuno was spotted by then Christian Island lighthouse keeper John Hoar, who in his log reported her to be "sitting fine in the water." A great gale came from the northeast the evening of November 22. The Waubuno, her passengers and freight, never made Parry Sound. Much debris was found along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay but there was no sign of the Waubuno or any survivors. The following spring the "upturned" hull was found beside Moberly Island. No bodies were ever found, which could explain reports of a ghost guarding the wreck. Could it be the ghost of Captain Burkit himself guarding his beloved Waubuno?
