Lighthouses loom large in tales of the paranormal, but it’s not always the keeper who haunts. The Cove Island Lighthouse is said to be haunted by the captain of a stricken vessel who helps the keepers of the light. During the gale of September 12, 1881, the wooden hull of the schooner Regina split open. Captain Amos Tripp was convinced he could ground her on a nearby sandbar, saving ship, cargo, and crew. His crew, however, disagreed, and took to the boats, leaving the brave captain alone. Not long after, his body washed ashore, with a sail for a shroud. Lighthouse keepers have since reported unseen help keeping the light burning. One keeper who neglected his duty, sleeping while the light died out, attributes the tricks of Captain Tripp to the light’s sudden revival. It’s said that the Captain was even good for a hand of cards with some of the light keepers. If you feel you’re being watched as you pass by Cove Island, don’t worry. It’s just the shadowy figure of Amos Tripp wishing you safe passage. The fifth in a limited edition series, Legends of the Bay. Great Stories. Great Beer.
