Lake of Bays MOCHA PORTER is our new (and tasty!) winter seasonal beer. We use roasted barley and chocolate malt to give this beer a full, rich character, balanced by the addition of several kilograms of real ground coffee right into the mash. As with our Pale Ale, the focus in recipe development has been to keep things simple, and create a balanced, flavourful beer that leaves you wanting more after the last mouthful. We've deliberately kept alcohol content in the "reasonable" range on this one, the idea being that you can share a bottle or two with a friend without ending up on the floor! If everyone likes it, we'll fire up the brew system and continue with more production runs throughout the winter. The Mocha Porter project was initiated by Jed Corbeil and Curt Dunlop of the The Griffin Pub in Bracebridge, who put forward the idea of producing a collaborative beer using a range of goods produced right here in Muskoka. We teamed up with the Griffin, Diesel House Coffee Roasters and Savour Muskoka, our local food producers' association, to create a beer with truly local character! It's been a fun and exciting process developing this new brew (have a look at photos of brewing and packaging on the News & Events page), and we hope you'll make Lake of Bays Mocha Porter a part of your winter celebrations this year!

Good looking beer, dark brown pour with a thick beige head that leaves globs of lacing. Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and vanilla . A little watery but smooth and drinkable. Worth a try.

Poured a thick creamy brownish head, very bubbly. Has an extremely dark colour. Good lacing and retention. Average carbonation. Mocha, coffee, chocolate in flavour as well as aroma. Some sweetness and a slight watery mouthfeel. Somewhat mild. Notes of molasses in the finish. Pretty easy drinking and not as thick as expected.

Purchased at the Niagara Falls LCBO on Ferry street. Big darker beige cap that has great retention and thick bubbly lacing. Looks like I am drinking a coffee (as the paper cup I am using for this is the only thing I could find in this hotel - coffee cups). Dark brown colour with a mild roasted malt aroma and hints of coffee. Smooth mouthfeel with a little stickiness, but overall, pretty refreshing. Notes of toffee and nuts come out eventually in the scent. The taste is well-blended and light with the roasted malt and hop to not be too bitter, and the coffee showing up more in the aftertaste. Very easy to drink as this one is not overpowering, not too thick and not having a never-ending finish.

The beer poured a very dark brown, almost black into a Leffe goblet, with a thin brown bubbly head. The aroma was roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was dark malt, coffee, and chocolate. -

750ml Silk screened crown top bottle..... Puts an ebony brown clear ale with ruby highlights in the glass...thick 3 finger tan cap lasts and laces. Moderate carbonation. Aroma is certainly coffee-infused with some roasty grains and maltose sweetness, grassy hopping. Rich creamy mouth feel, medium body. Taste: Big roast coffee blast in the front accompanied with roasty maltiness, hops sit in back ground...light demure sweetness...long roasty slightly dry finish with increasing bittering from coffee and hops. A very smooth rounded coffee porter that drinks well. The most outstanding character is the silky-creamy rich mouth feel and body...usually porters are more diluent but this one is sturdy. Great first mainstream departure from a new craft brewer and very promising of this brewer’s potential.

A large bottle of chocolate porter that makes a great tasting beverage. At only 5.2% it's not much of a stomach warmer, but still a great beer. A shimmering dark brown pour, with a brown head fills the glass. Coffee, chocolate, toffee, vanilla, and roasted malts are the order of the day. Flavour is the same...almost a chocolate milk flavour. One could drink tons of these!
