This one certainly has a lot more going than the Blond/Enkel. Moderate aroma of oak, spices, dried fruits and English pipe tobacco (before smoking!) Delightful flavour of gently roasted malts, some yeast and spices. Moreish indeed. Moderate hops in the aftertaste. I'm looking forward to the Triple and Quadruple!

Sampled in a flight @ The Hourglass Brewery in Longwood, FL. This was one of my favorites of the day. Flavors of caramel malt and bread, with a mild hop to offset the balance. Creamy texture and feel. Medium brown, cloudy appearance with a frothy off-white head....good lacing too. I may try a pint of this in the future if I see it again.

Comes out of the bottle a mouth-watering clear sienna with a fairly thick, if not very persistent, tan head. Malty aroma has subtle fruity and honey tones and a hint of brown sugar. Robust flavor fills the mouth with sweet malt, banana, caramel and honey tones swirling about. Smooth texture has a good amount of fizz and thickness, dancing down the pipes to the tummy. Good work, monks!

Fantastic dark ruby clear color with brownish faom head, lasting and lacing to glass. Aroma is sweet fruit, berries and stuff. Taste is surprisingly not too sweet (I normally find the dubbels to be too sweet), some low bittersweet. Short aftertaste, again not sweet, some barley. (Velp 201209)

Not an exciting trappist ale, more of a middle of the road everyday belgian drink. Smell has nothing enticing - no fruity aroma in all the bottles I've had so far. More of an alcohol/chemical odor. Taste is more on the beer side, less of the lush, fruity trappist fare. It's a smooth, lightly carbonated, alcohol-tasting drink. Fine for session drinking, but not something to sip and appreciate over an evening. Just chug it down! Go for the Quadrupel if you want to savor the elements.

330 ml capped bottle. Poured in the original La Trappe chalice a slight gushing and hazy oak-burgundy coloured ale with half a finger thin tan foamy head that had a short retention and tons of micro bubbles. Low carbonation. No lacing. The aroma is riped fruits, raisins, blackcurrants, pears, plums, spicy, cinnamom, nutmeg, toasted malts, some wood and molasses. The flavour is solid sweety roasted and caramel malts, notes of toffee, dark fruits, raisins, plums. The mouthfeel is tingling, silky and the alcohol prominent. This medium to full bodied ale has a dry sweety malts finish. An incredible feeling in the palate and a real and immediate warming effect. This ale is more sophisticated as it seems.

Interesting, it has most of the usual trappist characteristics: burnt sugar, dried fuits, fruity yeast, nice malt back bone, but this one has something a little bit different. Can't figure out what it is. Super super over ripe cherries. Pretty wicked fruit cake spice going on. Seems excessively carbonated, a trace of acid, trace of light roasted coffee. Mouthfeel is thin, but the flavours are full/round and lovely. Soft, thats a good word for it. Perhaps a bit of a nutty presence is lingering, not sure though. Average for a trappist, if not a bit below.

I tried this one on tap yesterday. I'm familiar with the Quadrupel but I never tried the Dubbel (shame on me). So when I got it I was stunned by the deep dark red, brownish colour with a small beige head. Aroma has malts and alcohol. Perhaps bit of dark sweets like chocolate. Taste has syrup, raisins and plums with a bit of the alcohol coming back in the taste. La Trappe is definitely one of my favourite brewery's and remains being so after this beer.

Beer pours a reddish brown with a big head that does not hang around to long, the aroma is mainly malty but there is a hint of raisin. The sweetness of the malt hits along with a faint banana and raisin. The sweetness is cut by the alcohol burn as it goes down. Excellent and a little different than other Dubbels.

A pretty amazing beer. On tap at the malt house, incredible how it was presented. Wasn't expecting such a mellow looking brew, chalice, clear mahogany, no head. Taste is so comfortable. Everything is peaceful. "Machine Gun- Jimi Hendrix"

A deep reddish brown colored ale. A dense, frothy tannish head rises above. Not a whole lotta hang time. Settles into a small lacing. Dark fruit and alcohol nose. Moderate bodied, warming and definitely creamy. Like in the nose the fruits dominate giving a sense you’re drinking a very strong wine. Nevertheless nice, drinkable abbey ale.
