Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it's a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasion. A beer in the traditional Munich style!

Biscuit/cracker nose with some sweet malts and fruity hop notes. Medium brown body with hints of copper topped with a foamy Whitehead that doesn't last long and leaves sudsy lace. Mouth is lightly carbonated.. somewhat creamy your light and clean in the palate. Hints of chocolate and coffee in The malt bill followed by a touch of caramel notes leads to an exceedingly clean finish that is short-lived. Certainly one of the ultimate sessionable beers.

September 2017: 500 ml bottle, from Ales By Mail (despite not being an ale!). ABV is 5.5%. Dark reddish brown colour, large to moderate off-white head. Distinct malty aroma, notes of brown bread and caramel. The flavour is also distinctly malty, but slightly less sweet than expected. Again notes of brown bread and caramel. Very moderate hops.

Pours a clear cola brown with a fairly thick and fluffy pale buff head. Malty aroma has caramel and fruity undertones. Flavor is malty at heart, with subtle toasty and fruity notes and a hint of caramel. Texture is average, but it goes down well. If not terrific, certainly drinkable.

The beer pours a translucent brownish red with a half inck tan coloured bubbly head which lasts. The aroma is nutty malt, floral hops, caramel, and chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee hints, and a nice bitter finish.

Pours a clean copper-amber colour with a nice creamy-frothy beige head, good retention and creamy lacing. Munich malt smell with nutty notes and hints of caramel, dark fruits and molasses. Mouthfeel is a little oily. The taste has the dark malt as well, with mild roasted malts, bread, caramel and even hops in the finish. A little metallic feel some times. Not a bad, easy-drinking Dunkel, except for this last one (metallic notes). Unnoticeable with food.

Pours out like a glass of rusty ice tea with no head. The aroma is of malt and nothing else. The mouthfeel is very thin. The taste is nothing interesting or worth writing about. I won't buy this again.

Pours a crystal clear dark amber with a one finger off white head that lofts a bit. Lots of carbonation. Aroma is heavy on dark malts with a slight date backing. Taste is heavy on the caramel. Hints of dark malts and milk chocolate. Green bottle and is not skunky at all which is unbelievable. Sticky ending. Simple yet complex. Very good transition beer.

Pours thinner and lighter than I expected. I'll call it chestnut in appearance. Aroma is of old malt and syrup. There is a nice foam cap that quickly settles. The taste is just outstanding. A buttery mix of sweeet malt, carmel and bread. The finish is clean. It's easy to see why this great beer has been around so long.

Pours a deep ruby red nearly brown color with a light just off white head, the head faded fast giving almost no lacing. The aroma is of roasty malt and darker fruit flavors of cherry and some raisin. The taste is a sweeter malty flavor meets the tongue. The good roastiness has breadiness in the taste as well. Toward the middle of the taste some sweeter fruit flavors. I really enjoy the Hofbrau brand.

It pours a dark copper with a thick and foamy light-tan head and some lacing climbs up the glass. An aroma of roasted caramel malts, sweet breads, light coffee and chocolate, burnt toast, nuts, light hops, oranges and citrus, raisins and dates, and mild spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and fairly rich. Flavors of roasted caramel malts, sweet breads, light coffee and chocolate, toast, nuts, hops, oranges and citrus, raisins and dates, light molasses, and mild spiciness. Excellent altogether ..
