Honorary brothers Tom Baker and Tony Forder, created thier special Gruit to flavor this medieval ale. In the 14th century, before the advent of hop usage, ales were infused with sacred and secret herbs. Yarrow, Sweet GAle and Wild Rosemary were used to create this earthy, complex and intriguing ale.

An orange appearance. The flavor is similar to cough medicine. Some weird sour beer flavor and hint of herbal junk. No wonder most people drank wine back then.

Spiced aroma made me fear for the worst. The sourness covered the spices, so that's good. It wasn't bad, was definitely memorable, but not something to go back to. I can't say I'm going to miss HW horribly....

Ok, within a spiced style. An interesting beer. Pours an almost orange color with a soda-like initial head that disappeared quickly and didn't lace at all. Sedimentation floating around the glass and on the bottom. The aroma was sprite soda-like and spruce-like. The flavor was junipers, spruce, and some other spice. The base beer was somewhat sour, not so much tart, and perhaps wheat-like. Very odd. Mouthfeel was thin.

Beer pours a cloudy middle-brown like the ice teas you see in the plastic bottles. Head is active and fizzy, like a coke, and it fades just as quickly. The aroma is very lemony and piney like lemonheads. On closer inspection it seemed more like Juniper than Pine. It reminds me vaguely of pinesol. I wonder if I can use it to clean my kitchen counter. It is getting kind of dirty. The flavor is big, and I can see the comparison to an IPA. Surprisingly tart (although I really shouldn't have been considering the lemon smell). Following the tart shock I picked up a nice blend of spruce/juniper and pear. The mouthfeel is very smooth and slick without being too heavy. This beer is very different from what I'm used to, but it is a very well crafted experimental brew that I would drink again if I could get it.

This ale pours a slightly hazy golden amber color from a 12oz bottle. Small to no sized head. Aroma is orange, herbs and spices. A touch earthy as well. A light to medium bodied traditional ale. Malts are fruity and sweet, lots orange and citrus flavors. No hops as this is a gruit but the herbs and spices add a lots of spiciness and bitterness to the beer. It’s a big surprise at just how bitter this ale is. It near a Berliner Weiss for tartness. Very refreshing. Nice carbonation, which is not visible at all in the beer, it looks flat and dead, which is not the case. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is crisp and tart. Aftertaste is tart.

This is not a beer for everyone and I think it does not sell very well. It tastes overwhelmingly of herb and spices, maybe a little too strong on the spices.

Well, this is certainly different. I love the idea behind this brew. It is a rendition of a style of beer that was brewed before the advent of hops. Yarrow, sweet gale, rosemary, and a plethora of spices replace hops in this gruit. It's very interesting to get a taste of what beer might have tasted like 500-600 years ago. To be quite honest, I wouldn't buy it again, but the brewery gets points of originality. Very sweet, medicinal, and full of spices. It's worth a try if you can get a single, but don't go nuts on it.

Poured a reddish golden color with no head. Sweet, yeasty, fruity aroma. Sweet and fruity taste. A bit sour, in a citrus way, but not hoppy. Smooth crisp fruity flavor. Mouth puckering finish. A weak mouthfeel.
