Great Lakes Brewery Red Leaf Lager

Picked up a tallboy at the brewery. Pours a fairly large frothy off-white head that stays around long enough. Has a clear light amber appearance. Moderate carbonation. Lacing is decent. Aromas of toasted malts, notes of caramel. Flavours are sweet, subtle dark fruits. Also some  Average retention. Somewhat of wet mouthfeel. Not bad.

Pours a copper/brown with a light tan head that fades to a thin layer after a couple minutes. Small amount of lacing. malty aroma and flavour, slightly dry. Somewhat thin but smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Decent beer that goes down easy.

Written "Smooth red lager" on the front label. And it is. Pours a brown-red colour with a decent looking creamy off-white head. This one unfortunately does not stay long, and lacing is left to a bare minimum. The nose is quick to disappear, with a malty aroma. Smooth mouthfeel for sure and carbonation is pretty normal for a swill like this one. Not much flavours. A bit of caramel malt at first ending in a little bread aftertaste. Might be a little better than Rickard's Red, but just an average summer red lager.

a bit of an interesting taste but kinda flat. No noticeable aroma, decent appearance. Fairly carbonated and not alot of attack. Fairly smooth but nothing really noticible. Average.

Red beers can be hit and miss, and this one was a miss. A clear reddish colour with a white head. The aroma was strong roasted malt, some spice, and a little grass. The flavour was musty old malt with a little bitterness in the finish. Not a beer for beer lovers.

Beer poured lighter than the likes of Rickard's and Alexander Keith's red. Head grew rapidly with large bubbles, but then subsided just as quickly. Nose was almost non-existent. Taste is weak, yet appealing - unfortunately this lasts for a minimal length of time. Not a great beer, but also not objectionable in any way.

I tried this beer on February 14, 2008 at "Smokeless Joe's" in Toronto. The beer poured a beautiful translucent dark red colour with a very thin white head. The aroma was very weak with a slight malt smell. The mouthfeel was light, dry, with low carbonation. The flavour was slightly malty, and slightly sour. Not an enjoyable beer, and very similar to Alexander Keith's Red.

That beer definitely miss some roundness and not even refreshing for a lager i would say as a first impression it's a big deception especially when it's labeled bronze winner at the beer world cup...Something unfinished...Not reccomended.

thi beer is average but that's okay to me. red beer must be hard to make cause alot of canadian brewers don't get it right. but if you like rickard's or old mick's on tap, this is just like them and usually cheaper. and unlike rickard's, tastes passable out of the bottle.

Judging by the varied reviews this beer must vary lot to lot...that seems to explain it to me. Sampled twice at the goodbeer festival. Poured a copper color (where’s the "red" here?) slight head that disappeared fast. No real nose to it... wisps of caramelized malt where barely detected. Has a weak mouthfeel...light body some sweet malt tastes...hops subdued...quick clean finish with no aftertaste. I tried it again after sampling other beers but I got the same impression...this is as mainstream as they come...I didn’t bother with their golden horseshoe lager as I suspect it would be similarly mainstream and at this stage of the game I’m lagered out where commonplace commercial tasting beers are concerned. This isn’t bad but it’s not good and has no distinctive qualities...we need another mainstream bland beer alike another tax hike.
