Reddish brown colour, bread yeast and just a hint of coffee in the aroma. Flavour leaves you with the impression of drinking this beer in a bakery (this is not necessarily an insult to the beer - it's probably an OK accompaniment with a few sandwiches or even Danish pastry). Drier than I expected. Not as good as the Einbecker Ur-Bock Dunkel (and not nearly as good as Aass Bock, which I enjoyed 1 hour earlier) - a bit watery, but still a drinkable dunkel that won't offend anyone.

Pours a nice clear Coca-Cola brown with a fairly thick, fine-bubbled and rather persistent pale tan head. Strong, malty aroma has an overtone of pear and is on the sweet side. Flavor has a malty core and tones of caramel, licorice and fruit and a hint of grass. Smooth texture has a decent amount of fizz and about average body. Overall, not outstanding but definitely worth a try.

another Steins purchase that i should have passed on .. . pours a medium black .. . light foam .. . light licorice and old wet coffee grounds .. . thin and cruddy .. . . ban meatballs. only sensible solution.

Man, I was underwhelmed with this one... didn't really appear to be a schwarz; more of a dunkel. Slightly stale, bready aroma, poured dark brown. Far thinner than I imagined to the pallette. Mild coffee and licorice flavor - drinkable.

I'm always down for a good German beer....let alone a Dunkel. Reminded me of a better Becks. Nice caramel malty flavor. Smooth mouthfeel. Not a bad price for import. Nothing special but a decent beer. I would get this again.

Bottle says Schwarzbier, pour and description say Dunkel. Pours a dark weak-coffee brown with a slight cream head and scattered lacing. Light toasty malt aroma with a slight sweet caramel and chocolate malt and very slight green bottle light-struck skunkiness - almost a hint lemongrass and Bavarian Pilsner smell. Mouthfeel is a bit thin. Taste is adequate with the light toasty maltiness and the slight sweetness then that funky pils flavor rears itself causing a bit of mishmash in the taste.

Reddish brown body. Not an over impressive head. The nose was more yeasty than anything else I could detect. Mocha flavor. Carbonation made up all for the lack of complexity and gave me my money's worth in a drink.

Best before somewhere in 2006,could explain my poor rating...Black no head, way too thin aroma of light malt (coffeish).Ashy flavor and watery no satisfaction at all from this otherwise great brewery...Will try again looking closely on the best before....

A decent schwartzbier here (says on the label). Average in nearly every catergory save for the look and smell which were a bit higher. The beer pours out a dark brown, nearly black color with a nice foamy head. An aroma of chocolate and subtle dark fruits (dark cherries?) moves foward on to a lighter tasting beer. Nothing heavy handed with this beer, although it is in the darker realm. Flavor is lightly chocolate, some raisins, and some hints of brown sugar. The whole beer is too weak though. Perhaps the brewers were shooting for sessionability? Nice to drink, as I mentioned not heavy in any way but there are better dark beers to be had.

Amber coloured, not much head. Aroma of caramel, sweet malts and a bit roast. Flavour is plum, alcoholl and dark fruits. Still quite watery and slightly metallic also.

not overly impressed. poured a reddish brown with a fluffy tan head. not much of an aroma and the flavor was very plain, lacking a real roast flaovr that a black beer should have
