Nine traditional ale malts, Cascade hops and Michael's favourite ale yeast. Pale - as in not black - with a vibrant, piney bouquet of hop-driven citrus. A finely tuned balance of power: big malts and big hops underpin this beer's high gravity. A West Coast style IPA which boldly declares that 9 is the new 10.

Not a bad appearance. Weak pepperoni and mozzarella aroma and flavour. Ooops sorry, this beer goes well with pizza but so do many more. One in a long line of try but not buy again.

Tried this one on tap at C'est What pub, Toronto. Pours beautiful copper w/ red highlights, perfect clarity and small creamy head. Aroma is pleasant but utterly balanced, not as hoppy as I expected by style. Flavor is bright, floral and bitter with a nice clean finish. medium bodied and gently carbonated. This is one of my favorite Ontario beers.

Pours a small amount of foamy off-white head and has a clear amber/light copper appearance. Aromas of mild roasted malts and mainly richer, darker type hops, somewhat earthy. Has a fairly bitter hop taste with dark roasted malts in the mix. Seems like burnt hops or something, quite unusual to me. Mild citrus hops. Hints of coffee and mild chocolate flavours with raisins and nuts as well. Above average carbonation. Prickly and warming mouthfeel. Doesn't feel like an ipa. Still pretty good though.

Purchased a 6-pack of this at the LCBO, in 275ml bottles. Pours a clean copper colour with an off-white creamy-froth head that has a decent stay and some nice thick lacing. Hoppy nose with hints of caramel malts. Medium-bodied and well-brewed between good wetness and a little dryness. The taste is hoppy as well, but not too bitter, with some grain showing in the aftertaste. An easy-drinking APA.

For an IPA this is not overtly hoppy. Now I like that but others may not. It is pretty damn good though. Gorgeous red colour. Yes red. Unusual for an IPA. Almost looks like an Irish Ale. Too bad the brewery went tits up I would've liked to tried their other brews. Nice summer IPA.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium brown color ale with a light foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of dry caramel malt with light bitter hoppy notes also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by some light caramel malt notes with a very subtle bitter hoppy finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. This is closer to an APA then an IPA and would benefit from having additional hops.

Fresh bottle: Poured a clear, lush orange-copper with ruby highlights. 2Finger frothy tight pored beige cap...good retention and lacing. Pungent malt and hop aromas; bready, doughy, toffee, floral, citus, grassy,,,wonderful nose to it. Pleasant rounded character, well bodied and smooth mouth feel. Big malts (4 that I can detect) and hops( 3 Ale varieties) blend in a fantastic symbiotic balance...leads to a clean lightly drying finish. A very approachable big ale, well crafted with rare perfect balance. Bittering is tamed so all the lush malt and hop layering is distinguishable to the palate.. Absolutely world class! Never change or tamper with this brew’s recipe!

A decent dark IPA that is being found in and around the Toronto area this year. It is dark brown with a hoppy aroma and apple tones. It goes down very well with a refreshing bitter grapefruity finish.

The Beerbistro (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
June 18, 2009
MIke Duggan #9 IPA was a recent finalist at Volo's IPA challenge (May 2009). The beer pours a translucent dark brown (it is referred to as a dark IPA). The head was white, creamy, and about an inch thick. The aroma was sweet malt, citrus, pine, and definitely hops. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The taste was soapy, with hints of malt, and a bitter grapefruit finish.
