First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

Courtesy of slowrunner77 - thanks! Big and bold in every sense of the word - and my first ever brew from Deschutes. It does not disappoint. Floral citrus in the nose and flavor with a pleasant resiny-pine. I seemed to get a bit of sweet tangerine that was unexpected and very nice. Fluffy white head and lacing for days. Bitter finish with a light malt.

2012 edition. Dark gold pour with a large fluffy white head that eventually settles into a thin cap on the glass. This beer is all about the hops. Very little balance or complexity but that is just fine with me. Citrusy and piney hops dominate the aroma and flavor making for an excellent IPA.

From Brewery Creek, in a bomber. Poured a body of clear amber under a foamy, ivory head. Nose was okay, with citrus and hops. Flavour was 'different'; the high ABV was obvious from the outset, and the bourbon notes were in full view. Good hopping and pine notes, too. A sweet hint at the finish and a decent mouthfeel. Kinda like a less malty barleywine.

Very citrus, pine aroma with a nice tan head and clear burnt amber color. Alcohol was not very timid on the first sip. Medium full body with not a whole lot of carbonation, but it still manages to have some OK lacing. Lots of hops but also a heck of a lot of sweetness from a ton of malt. Maybe a little too sweet. This didn't excite me compared to any other Imperial IPA.

I think the sweetness in this one kept this beer from getting close to or even a 4-rating. Instead of the hops being the star of the show, the caramel/crystal malt flavors seemed to overcome at times the piney punch of the hops while other times it was very balanced. I like my IIPA’s on the unbalanced side with hops being front and center. I did enjoy this very much and thinks it’s a well-made beer. Sweet perhaps, but well made. -

Able to try this courtesy of trade with emmasdad. Bomber poured a dark amber into a Duvel tulip with a two-finger head which quickly dissaped. Lacing was ample and lasting. Nose was biscuity and sweet malts and some citrus and floral hops, though subdued for what I expected. Not a lot of carbonation is visible nor affects mouthfeel or taste. Mouthfeel was medium, not terribly oily and almost chewy. Taste was well balanced, some citrus (pineapple, lemon, orange), some hoppy bitterness giving way ultimately to a syrupy sweetness. It's maybe a bit to cloying and sticky for my liking but all-in-all a decent, well-balanced brew.

At my waterhole I had a real treat As I have been looking at 3 IPAs for sometime now, but not willing to put up the bucks to buy a sixer of each. I sit down and what do I see in front of me but the 3 on tap! All three I would put into a new class of beer NWIPAs. As they mellow out the hops with carmel malts. Not a true IPA. Pours a golden orange with a white head, nose of citrus and pine. Taste is hoppy but smoothed with malts. The lacing is wonderfull. The mouth feel is clean and full. This was my #2 pick of the night. And not the highest rated. But for a night of having these 3 brews being #2 is not a bad thing at all.

this one is a different (and slightly better) recipe than the original Hop Henge. like the last review says...HUGE citrus and floral hops in the nose, and more in the flavor. A big, chewy beer. If it weren't for a small overabundance of sweet malt, I'd have graded it even higher. As it is, it's the best "hoppy" product from Deschutes. Very enjoyable brew. Bitter finish, with a slightly sweet lingering aftertaste.

Earlier to i tried Deschutes obsidian stout and proclaimed it the best i have tried from that company, and now its been dethroned by the experimental ipa. Wow, what a beer, Aroma is wonderful, too many to list, all of the citrus, floral and tropical fruit you can imagine. Nice thick, chewy body. Flavor starts with the floral & citrus attributes, but then things take off, literally. Like an excellerating airplane the bitterness hits then it climbs until take off, climbing and the leveling out. i havent had anything like this before, or at least noticed it. Damn fine brew, and i will buy some more asap, do the same and you wont regret it hop heads!!
