In April 2000, a panel of 33 International Brewing Experts at the Millennium Brewing Industry International Awards in blind taste tests, voted O’hara’s Celtic Stout the World’s Number One Stout above 74 competing products. The awards held since 1886 are regarded as the most esteemed brewing competitions in the world. The Judges brief in judging the different beers was two fold; firstly in terms of its sensory appeal (i.e. taste, smell etc) and secondly to accredit the commercial worth of the beer quality. They awarded O’Hara’s Celtic Stout the prestigious title of Champion Stout in the International Dark Milds, Stouts and Porters competition in addition to the Gold Medal in its own category for beers between 4.2-6.9% abv. Full bodied and luxuriously smooth it is the combination of traditional stout hops, an extra pinch of roast barley and crystal clear Irish water that make O’Hara’s Celtic Stout a delicious stout with just enough malt sweetness to balance that discernible roast bite.

(500 ml bottle, bought in Denmark). Colour is black (= very dark brown), very good and creamy tan head, leaves a nice lacing. Lovely roasted coffee-like aroma with notes of unrefined cane sugar. Flavour is all roast barley with coffee notes, not particularly complex but still very good. Dry aftertaste. An excellent alternative to GBM (Guinness/Beamish/Murphy’s).

The beer pours a translucent coca-cola colour when held to the sun. The head is creamy and brown and lasts longer than the beer did (about 30 minutes). The aroma was roasted malt and coffee. The mouthfeel was medium to full bodied, creamy and amply carbonated. The flavour was roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate and had a chalky finish. -

500ml bottle from BCLDB Nordel Crossing. Pour is a dark, nearly black, mahogany under a creamy tan head, of no short endurance. Delicious aroma, chocolate and coffee in generous helpings. Full-bodied mouthfeel. Flavour was heavenly (almost), with dark chocolate and bitter coffee, plus a sweetish caramel influence. Nice finish, with some bitter notes. Seriously good.

Pours an opaque black color with a small lasting head. Aroma of espresso, chocolate. Taste has notes of espresso with a very nice dark chocolate finish. Moderate carbonation.

This beer has some good characteristics. Looks great for a bottled stout. Long lasting head with nice lacing. Roasted malt aroma. The flavour isn't too complex but it is full. Dark chocolate, strong coffee and roasted malt. Medium smooth mouthfeel. Good beer, think I'll buy more.

Nice appearance, black with creamy light brown lacing, lip sticking foam head. Weak aroma as it is muffled by foam. Taste roasted coffee beans, and quite bitter. Real nice beer. (Moscow 201402)

Pours a pitch black with a massive 3 finger, off white to light brown head. Carbonation is fairly heavy for a beer as black as this one. Aroma is of light chocolate, caramel, oats and roasted malts. taste starts off not very lively with hints of light roasted malts and metal. Kinda thick and dry. Not a very good stout.

Want a stout? Ireland should always be among the first countries to turn to. And this one delivers. A jet blackness on pour with a big creamy textured, tan head rising above. Great hang time. A thick foamy film aside the glass and nearly as thick soapy ringlet make up the lacing. The nose is dark chocolate, and roasted bitter coffee. Nice dance in the tasting of molasses, bitter dark chocolate and grassy hops. Medium bodied, plenty carbonated and smooth....got me wishing I’d had picked up a six pack of this brew.

Sampled on 5/10/2010. This dry stout pours a deep black color from a 33cl bottle. Large sized tan foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is roasty malt, some smoke and a touch of chocolate. A medium bodied dry stout. The malts are roasty and chocolate. The hops are earthy. Nice balance. Good carbonation. A touch fruity at the finish. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Deep mahogany pour with a thick tan head and tons of lacing. Big toasted malts with a burnt toast aroma highlighted with a slight java/cocoa/burnt brown sugar smell. Big almost burnt toast taste with cocoa and java and touch of hops bitter. Dry finish. Nice stout and another off my wish list.
