The beer was mahogany brown with a tan coloured head. The aroma was roasted malt, coffee, and some slight hoppy tinges. The mouthfeel was medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour was roasted malt, some coffee hints, and some hoppy bitterness.

Like Amsterdam, Black Oak was there at the beginning of the craft boom in Ontario, but upped there game around 2010 when more entrants started entering the field. Unlike Amsterdam, Black Oak has always made good beer. This is a translucent brown beer with an off-white bubbly head. Roasted malt and coffee make up the aroma and flavour. Hints of chocolate keep it interesting

Got this one in an Ontario Craft Brewers discovery pack. Pours a nice clear brown with red highlights. Medium vanilla head. Average retention with a some sloppy lacing. Aroma is sweet, smokey, malty, nuts, almonds, dark fruits. Flavours is delicious starting sweet and malty with a smooth roasted flavour and flowing into a finish nice bitter finish. good balance. Nice smooth medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very good

Anything involving a squirrel can't be bad unless it involves your face. Pours a nice, clear dark brown brew with a thumb high mildly foamy head that condenses into a creamier cover. Really messy lacing throughout. Fresh, attentive aromas of bready malts (sweet side), honey, floral notes, weak chocolate, apricot, soft caramel. Tasty stuff - I was a little put off when it was colder. Good bitterness, roasted malts, slight coffee, some nuttiness, slight sourness right before the finish that lingers on along with the malty and bitter aftertaste. The lack of coffee based power is very welcome. Smooth beer... very smooth. I wish this was available in Edmonton.

I loved this beer. This beer pours a beautiful brown colour with a tan coloured head that lasts. The aroma is nutty, malty, and a little caramel and coffee background. The flavour is perfectly balanced between malt and hops.

Bottled@SBWF2007. Deep brownish amber colour, mediumsized head. Aroma is caramel, earth, malts and some slight metal. Flavour is the same without the metal, with some slight chocolate notes. Some slight hoppyness in finish.

Purchased in Toronto at a LCBO. Part 1 of 3 dark brown beer that are tested tonight. This one pours a clean brown colour that light can be seen through. Good beige creamy head with high retention and excellent thick and creamy lacing. The aromas are of dark malt, molasse, nut, wood and some dark fruits. As the brew breaths, some chocolat scent also appears. The mouthfeel is rather watery though, so this can make a good session dark ale. Taste is like the nose, but with some light burnt wood in the aftertaste. Quite refreshing for a nut brown.

Taste like a brown porter and carries itself kinda like a stout. However, no mistaking the crisp nut brown flavour. This is a beer that I would put up against any other in its category, or even overall. A tremendous effort by the Black oak people who have captured the style perfectly. A great drinking experience, a must have for the fall season. Don't pass this one up.

Poured a clear chestnut brown color... 3 finger tan sticky head stacks out of the glass and that goes to a 1cm cap and glass clinging lace that lasts the drink. Medium carbonation. Aromas are pronounced.. sweet bready malts, nutty yeast mustiness and a slight dried apricot note. Starts with a nice smack of chewy caramel malts then this balances with the grassy hops as the palate gets an oily feel...the middle is malt and nut pronounced...then this fades back as some sweetness is detected and the finish takes over...which is drying,... nutty-fruity and hoppy with a metallic after taste.. A very nice brown!..nutty-carmel a wisp of chocolate-smoke in the finish with good hop balance...my standard session brown
