This unique ale begins its life as a powerful and richly sweet stout to which Michigan tart cherries are added. The resulting black brew is complex, sweet and tart with a distinct cherry finish. It will improve with cellaring. Available September - May

I bought this on the waitress' suggestion (should I get this or Unibroue's Trois Pistoles). It poured coca-cola black into a tulip glass with absolutely no head. The aroma was that of coffee and cherries. The mouthfeel was crisp and full-bodied with a medium level of carbonation. The taste started off good with chocolate and cherries but by the end, it was so tart on the back of the tongue, it was all I could do to finish.

Poured out 100% solid black and that is the end of a good review. The taste, the mouthfeel and the aroma are all very average. First time Ive had a beer from Bells this average really subpar for Bells.

Pours a deep opaque sable with a fairly thick tan head. Aroma is rich and smoky with undertones of coffee, cherries and unsweetened chocolate. Smoky, slightly sweet flavor has a firm and slightly sour cherry tone as well as hints of coffee and chocolate. Silky smooth texture is just a little tingly.

I had this beer at Beamer's in Roanoke, VA. Here's the thing - it's a cherry beer but it was WAY OVER THE TOP. There isn't much I don't like by Bells but this was REALLY hard to drink.

Pours medium brown with a tall, tan head. The aroma boasts roasted coffee and chocolate, the cherry kicks in as the beer hits room temperature. The flavor is chocolately with a ton of cherry-sourness. Kind of a thin, full-body with strong carbonation. Decent but doesn't really live up to the Bell's that I know and love.

pours a dark brown with lighter brown highlights with a small creamy tan head forms with sticky foam on the sides, leaving virtually nothing a top. The aroma has a plenty of chocolate malt and a slight metallic note. A fleeting whiff of cherries. The taste is tart, sour cherry. This dominates until the finish, where some mildly bitter chocolate finishes things up. The mouthfeel is smooth and a little velvety, though there is a tartness that creates a puckering reaction.

Finally bought this brew after years of skipping it at Riley's. Pours a dark reddish brown body, nice brown head. Aroma is tart fruit, fermented fruit and oak. Taste is creamy, tart cherries, chocolate, and brown sugar flavors. Lots of little spritz in the glass. An inexpensive desert like beer.

Kind of like a stout meets a sour, the stout starts the experience but then is overrun by the sour cherries. Aroma is mostly roasted malts and cherry. Appearance is strong, good rich black with thick brown head. Not really the best beer experience out there.

bells continues to impress. seems to be a polarizing beer, but i thought it was quite good. the sweet tart cherry aspect was subdued in the aroma til it got to room temp. lots of chocolate and roasted malt. big aroma, flavor, and full thick feel for a 7% brew. vinous. cool balance of sweet malt, chocolate, roasted grain, a touch of hops, and tart cherries with a semisweet finish.

Sampled this right after trying the Kalamazoo Stout for the first time. Wishing I got extra Kalamazoo instead. I have been wanting to try this for a while, so grabbed a single to preview. I liked the Kalamazoo a lot better. This actually reminded me of the Kalamazoo as far as the base goes, but the added cherry juice didn't do it for me. I think I it is official, I like my beers brewed with fruit....not with juice added. The appearance is still thick and dark, with an added red tint cause of the cherry and all. It was kind of cool at first, but in the end I think it was a little odd and took away the awe that a midnight black gives. I'll repeat, can't wait to buy a 6'er of the Kalamazoo though!

In my beer run earlier today, this one caught the eye. Pours like a syrup, richly dark with mahogany tones. A big richly tan foamy head rises above. Some hang time, settling eventually into a thickcap atop the body. I get notes of coffee in the nose. The body is thick and nicely carbonated to provide a smooth ride down the olde gullet. The tart cherries take front stage in the tasting with a backdrop of chocolate and the coffee that was in the nose. Bell’s delivers again.
