Rated June 2007. Big thanks to Quake1028 for sharing this brew. Pours dark dark brown with thin off white head. This beer has a big aroma of oak. Wow, really big oak. I also get roasted malts, alcohol, some sour cherries too. Along with a big aroma the flavor is rather huge as well with under ripe cherries and tart grapes. There’s also sweet malt, chocolate covered cherries and a solid oakiness. Wow (again), lots of flavor. I’m also getting some yeasty notes too. I wonder if my taste buds can take much more of an assault?

Not sure I'd call this a stout, not dark, not roasty, not sure how it would qualify? Smells like a cherry candycane, looks like a burnt gold with just a hint of red, super clear. Tastes sweet and sour, reminds me of the apple ale from last year, great balance and flavor without hiding the malt background, really well done.

pretty sure this bottle was 6 years old. .. pours a murky dark tan, light foam .. . lots of cherry in the nose, mild tartness, and a rich molasses, with a berry, light funk, and more cherry .. . a fantastic beer .. He always leaves the TV on the Game Show network. I'm not sure why it bothers me, but it does.

Aroma of clean, tart cherries that are ripe but not overly so. Rocky, one-finger head with nice lacing. Smooth, medium-bodied mouthfeel, but slightly over-carbonated. Flavor of tart cherries that are slightly overripe, with hints of chocolate. I good beer that I'd like to try again.

more tart cheries than the Bell's version, which i also like. just depends what you're in the mood for i guess. not a lot of stout qualities come thorugh in this thinnish dark brown ale. just a touch of chocolate and roasted malt after the tasty intense cherry flavors. i like it about the same as Bells, but it's a totally different brew. this is a very nice cherry beer w/a side of stout, ehile Bell's is a stout w/a side of cherries

Taking away all ideas of what a stout is, I base my thoughts purely on the beer at hand. Dark brown body with amber edges along with a thick tan head and great lacing. Filling, sweet and tart. Very succinct and smooth. Tart cherry candy aroma with some very faint roasted malts and toast. Very aromatic and flavorful hints of wood and vanilla show up from time to time.

It never gets old, drinking those awesome fruit beers from NG. Hot damn! This one was super tastey. Pours a dark muddy brown, with a slight reddish tint to it. Nose is immediately chocolate covered cherries. No suprise there. Mouthfeel was suprisingly not like a stout, maybe more like a porter mouthfeel. Yet creamy and filling. Taste was a masterpiece. Not too sweet, classic tart cherry taste which puts Wisconsin on the map for cherry producers. Initial sweetness, but gives way to a cmore complex and satisfying finish.

Yet another winner from NG and pfoxyjohn. Lighter in color than any stout I've tried with a deep clear ruby brown pour with a tight head and lots of lacing. Cherries upfront and abundant in the aroma with a slight sour and touch of oaken vanilla and cocoa. Taste is astounding with a tart cherry base with a hint of toasted malts and oak with vanilla, cocoa, and very slight hops bitter. Excellent if you like cherries. I love cherries. Thanks again John and New Glarus. Another one marked off of the wish list - well, I'll keep it on there because I want more.

Bought this beer at Wholefoods in Madison, WI. Pours a dark red with a small white head. The aroma of cherries hits your nose instantly. Flavor is very sweet of cherries and tart. Not as creamy as some stouts I've head.

Bottle from brewblackhole. Calling this chocolate covered or toasty Belgian Red does have some merit. Dark brown color, perhaps a shade of red in there, nice fluffy tan/pinkish head. Nice lacing. Big whiffs of cherries in the aroma along with some malt, cookie, cough syrup (in a good way), and grains. Authentic cherry flavors are sharp and delicious upfront, very much like Belgian Red at first. Mid palate this switches gears and shows oak, soft milk chocolate, and caramel. More Stout-like qualities in the backend but there’s no mistaking that this is a Fruit Beer with cherries really standing out. There’s a velvety soft malt complexity in the flavor that seems like a trademark of New Glarus fruit beers. A real masterpiece. My bottle didn’t last very long.
