OUD BEERSEL OUDE GEUZE from Brouwerij Oud Beersel is a classic among Belgian beers. Following spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels (no yeast or sugar added), young and old lambic are blended; which results in a dry, tart and fruity wine like taste. Oud Beersel Oude Geuze is the white sparkling wine of the beer world.

Pours a hazy golden-orange colour with a fizzy warm cap that disappears quickly, leaving no lace. Woodsy aromas with a bunch of apples and hints of vinegar. The taste has some sourness, but well-blended with the rest - funky wild yeast giving earthy tones, apples, white grapes and some light wood. Pretty mild overall, but seems well-brewed.

The beer pours a hazy straw colour with a generous off-white head that lasts a while. The aroma is sour grains, wood, some tart fruity notes, and yeast. The mouthfeel is very light bodied, and highly effervescent, very a propos for the style. The flavour has white wine characteristics with a light fruit tartness. It is a very good lambic -

375 ml corked and caged bottle, b.f. 04/19/2032, bought at the brewery. Poured in the original Oud Beersel stemmed glass an unfiltered and strong hazy, almost opaque, golden-orange coloured Geuze with a one finger slight beige and soapy foamy head that had a short retention and tons of micro bubbles. Sustained carbonation. Some lacing. The aroma is heavy tart, fruity, sour apples, citrus and woody notes. The flavour is fruity, apples, raisins, pineapples, citrus, a pronounced woody feeling. The mouthfeel is fizzy, sparkling, Champagne like. The texture is watery. This medium bodied Geuze has a dry sourish finish. If the sourish feeling is naturally overwhelming, the tasting finishes with a soft-sweety note. For the "Guezard", no problem, it's a " good" Geuze, the beginner should think, every start can not be an easy one !

Not feeling this one as a 99th percentile beer, though it was enjoyed. Lemony aroma and tartness with some stinky cheese and a touch of green olive and hay. Carbonation a bit sharp. Probably textbook for the style, but just good IMO.

My second geuze drank immediately following my first! Really excited about this beer style. Purcahsed at Beermongers Portland, which had quite a few of this variety. This is more yellow than the past, with a touch of rust. White head. On a scale of one to 'carbonated' this lies in the are of 'carbonat'. Not as much as it could be but its very effervescent. Apple and champagne are the primary flvours. Some cracker. Not nearly as sour as I expected, and really was happy with it. Limited yeast profile, touch of barnyard and wildness again. I dropped the yeast into the beer too, cause I really like it. Touch of spicy, like a trace of nutmeg in your apple cider. Though this may be more white pepper than nutmeg. This is almost something I could serve to kids at christmas and have them really love it! I can taste turkey as a wicked pairing here.

375 ml "champagne" bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 6.0%. Pours with an enormous white (possibly slightly off-white) head, which slowly reveals a beer of hazy deep golden colour. Lovely complex aroma of farmhouse and fermenting fruits, hints of oak and spices. The flavour is fairly sour and tart, with a dry finish. Some hops in the aftertaste. Good stuff!

light sharp notes, almost ammonia levels of funk, but good .. . very clean, very tart, dances on the toe .. . clear gold, light foam ... very intriguing brew .. .lots of odd complexities ... "pay close attention!"

Feb 15, 2009 Corked 12 oz bottle. Aroma is pleasantly tart, very attractive and makes my mouth water. Pour is one of the best; comes out slightly pale yellow and ends with swirling hypnotics. Nice tasty flavor of sour and bitter something. Creamy fine fizzing palate. Finish does have some bitter hops or something on the finish but it is controlled. Not sure if its winelike in the taste but it sure is not what most would think beer taste is. Other than that funky finish, a very good experience. Hides the 6% alky very well! Love those lambics!

Ah, my 1st non-fruited lambic. Strong golden yellow pour, medium pale color. One inch thick true white head that has no intention of leaving. Mad carbonation, this beauty is lively. Funky fruity aroma, fermented peaches and pears with mild banana and some very noticeable tart yeast scents. The mouth feel is sparkling and bubbly at first, but immediately becomes sour. The initial sensations soon vanish into a wonderful dry tartness. Flavor is lightly complex. Fermented musty malt accompanied by tart citrus. Teasingly sweet them bam! A smack of sourness hits you, which is surprisingly crisp. I also picked up on a hint of celery along with many other earthy tastes. Dry, very dry with a nice white wine quality. Wow, this is one unique style for sure.
