Le Cœur Noir Black I.P.A. was designed and brewed collaboratively with Jordan Rainhard of Toronto’s Rainhard Brewing (www.rainhardbrewing.com). Nearly opaque, this black I.P.A. offers up aromas of citrusy, piney hops with malt intonations, toast and restrained mocha. History & Style Black I.P.A. is contemporary American beer style that combines black beer colour, assertive hop flavour and aroma and toasty (rather than roasty) dark malt character. Le Cœur Noir Black I.P.A. was first brewed in Feb. 2015 as part of Beau’s annual FeBREWary celebrations. Tasting Notes This strong ale is robust, but the alcohol remains well integrated. The overall flavour balance favours the impression of juicy, resinous hops supported by a solid malt backbone. Food Pairings Black pepper seared striploin with BBQ sauce, lamb vindaloo, charcuterie like prosciutto & dry cured salami, 70% chocolate pudding cakes, Strong, dry bleu cheese like Glengarry Celtic blue or Ermite from Québec, raw milk cheddar. Batch 4821 in a bottle from the LCBO. Pours a dark colour with ruby highlights and lots of particles floating through it. The head is frothy, beige, long lasting and leaving lots of lacing. Hoppy green grass hop aromas over chocolate notes and hints of coffee. The taste shows more of the coffee, all with the grassy bitterness. The roasted malts are mild in the background. Not a bad Black IPA.

The beer pours a solid coca-cola colour with a creamy tan coloured head that lingers. The aroma is light grapefruit, roasted malt, and coffee notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The flavour is roasted malt, coffee, and a citrusy finish. Not bad, but not great either.
