This is the beer that put LaPorte on the beer map. In 1996 while visiting the beautiful state of Maine, I bought some blueberry ale. I brought Maine lobsters and a case of fresh blueberry ale back from that trip...and the idea that blueberry ale should be brewed in LaPorte, Indiana by back Road Brewery. This beer is not what you might be thinking. It is not blue and it is not a sweet juice. But rather, it is a well balanced mild english ale with just the right amount of natural blueberry flavoring. It looks like a beer and tasts like a beer with just a hint of blueberry on the finish. Give this unique beer a try. It is available in bottles from May to September.

Pours clear amber with a thick and fluffy pale buff head. Malty aroma has a strong overtone of - yep, blueberry. Fresh blueberries, right off the shrub. Flavor is - WOOOO! Fresh blueberries, sweet and a little tart; I can taste the sweet country air! Malt and a bit of hops support the blueberry tone. I love blueberries, but I prefer beer that tastes like beer. Still, this is an enjoyable brew. Mouthfeel has OK body and fizz. OK if you love blueberries.

Rorange body, aroma of blueberry muffins and pine (?) incense. Blueberry and hops - Two great tastes that taste great together! It’s not just for Reese’s anymore! One moment, blueberries; the next, hops. I never could sense both of them at the same time. Medium, effervescent mouthfeel. Definite blueberry aftertaste. Spices, more bluberries, and malt become evident once beer warms.

This is one of the beers I got from BBB63 when I saw him in Cleveland. A large psfft of escaping CO2 burst out when I cracked this one open. Loads of carbonation with a large, sturdy, lasting head and walls of cascading bubbles. Very hazy brown body takes on a pretty, deep red hue in the light. Blueberry pie filling and something sharp (lemon zest?) top the nose, reminding me of the blueberry cake with cream cheese icing my mom makes. A bit of lingering bitterness in the finish, slightly metallic. Flavor is a bit weak after the aroma.

Cloudy copper color with a small off white head. Sweet and fruity blueberry aroma. Rather bland, blueberry taste. Left a kind of funky aftertaste in my mouth. The aroma was very nice however.
