Unlucky 13? If anything, 13 has been a lucky number and year for us! Here is our version of a Weizen Doppelbock, a very rarely brewed style marrying the complexities of two great German traditions, Weiss and Doppelbock. The aroma is dominated by fruity and spicy esters produced by the German Weiss yeast strain with a dry drinkability from the wheat malt. The flavor and color are dominated by the unique specialty grains that produce the Doppelbocks flavors of fresh baked bread, toffee and cocoa, and a dark-ruby red hue. Since goats have traditionally adorned Bock labels, we chose a Rocky Mountain Goat for this Rocky Mountain Bock. Peace to all and follow your dreams! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, malted wheat, imported German specialty grains and hops, and one unique German yeast. Bottled in May 2006.

Avery puts out some great beer. And this one wasn’t bad. A brownish body with red tinge. A creamy mouthfeel.. The head is a little slim on the scale of robustness. The nose is bread and fruit. The palate is hit with alcohol cutting through that malt and dark fruits.

Dark brownish ruby colour, big beige head. Aroma is alcohol, plum and a bit glueish. Flavour is malty, alcoholic and bananas. Some roast and smoke also. Lovely balanced. Pleasantly done and a great session beer.

Pours a very dark brown, with a thin head that fades rapidly to a few small bubbles and thin ring, leaving behind only traces of lace. Smell; lots of dark fruits such as grapes, plums and some mild hints of bananas. Licorice, chcocolate, caramel and some touches of coffee all come out as well. Taste; the dark fruits are the first flavors to really jump out at me with the grapes and plums, with the bananas coming through a bit more than they did in the aroma. Caramel and chocolate malts add a nice sweetness, and the coffee adds just enough bitterness to offset the sweet. It takes a few minute for the Weiss flavors to show themselves, and on the first few sips I wasn't sure that i really liked this all that much. But once I got used to it a bit, and let it warm up some, it definitely grew on me, and I found myself wanting more. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and on the slick side, with very low carbonation. Drinkability is pretty high, especially since the alcohol barely makes its presence known, aside from some warming as you drink this.

Bottle courtesy of SS: Poured a dark black color weizenbock with a medium foamy head with average retention but good lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt is pretty enticing with some light clove note also noticeable. Taste of sweet caramel is a bit overpowering and hides the clove aspect of the beer which would have been enjoyable. Alcohol is slightly detectable but I had worst and beer is not fully filtrated which I ma grateful for. Overall, I would say that this is not the best of weizenbock but a very good effort nonetheless from a brewery that sometimes leave me puzzle.

Hmm...well, I wanted to like this. But it was just outright too bland. While the high malt content should mute the weizen character a bit, it shouldn't be blunted to this point. It became rather chalky and two dimensional in flavor halfway down the glass. Chocolate and malt, which aren't bad, dominated, but I really wanted some more banana and clove, plus a bit of wheat tang, but little was to be found. An enjoyable beer, but not expressive.

Well, I got me another Avery product and contrary to what eagle says, Avery usually does very good stuff; especially when it comes to the bigger brews. I am looking forward to this one because weizenbocks are, for the most part, rare. The aroma is complex and I am picking up some chocolate, cocoa, dark fruit, and spice and is sweet for the most part as well as malty and bready with some yeast. I also would like to add the aroma is very reminiscient of a dark Belgian strong ale like a dubbel. The appearance is a very dark brown with some extremely dark-burgundy overtones when held to the light but is not penetratable and offers up a nice and full-sized head on top that is fluffy and creamy as well as frothy and hardly discipates (this one has wonderful head retention) and is a light-tan in color with rocky bubbles on the nose. The mouthfeel is full-bodied and very complex with overtones of wheat maltiness and is round with a palate that is thick and damn fine. The flavor is malty, fruity, has spicey esters with an aftertaste that is of cocoa and chocolate with nice yeastiness and has a finish that is creamy, smooth, frothy, and a bit wheaty-like with some alcohol noticeable. Overall, this is a fine brew in my opinion and is very malty but is balanced wonderfully with yeastiness and fruitiness and this is a very nice representation of the style even though I have only had a few weizenbocks...I really liked this product; it is very unique and is a pleasure to experience.

Ah, I can't kill this one, but Avery regularly lets me down, and they surely do so again with this brew. Pour was decent, nothing special, but it gave an ok initial head (with fairly weak retention) and yielded ok lacing. The body was dark brown to black, hard to get light through. The aroma was strong caramel over top of the usual weizenbock notes of bananas, roast, spicing. The flavor was way overdone on the caramel and included some bread and plastic aspects. Disappointingly hot on the alcohol and a little too astringent, needing some age for sure. But, at these caramel levels, age isn't going to improve this much. Mouthfeel was heavy with moderate to light carbonation.

Dark opaque brown with small light brown head. Yeasty aroma of cookies, wheat, dark cherries, vanilla and banana. Fruity and yeasty flavour of vherries, banana, sweet licorice, rose petals and spices. Full bodied. Vinous aftertaste of licorice, banana, black pepper and alcohol.
