Our California Lager is also a single-hop beer, using only fresh, whole Cluster hops, all descended from an old line originally grown in California. Cluster has a long history as a “dual-purpose hop” for both bittering and aroma, which creates a flavor profile like no other. Brewed with San Francisco tap water, fresh from Yosemite, and fermented with our own special strain of lager yeast, our California Lager is kräusened in the traditional manner and lagered in our cellars. The result is a uniquely sessionable lager beer, which is maltier, hoppier, and somewhat stronger than modern American lagers. Its brilliant golden color, lingering effervescence, balanced depth of flavor, distinctive aroma, and smooth finish make this inaugural brew of the Anchor Brewing Zymaster™ Series a delightful tribute to the rich heritage and traditions of California brewing.

Just another lager - some biscuit a little hops and malt, better than your million gallon average swill brewery. Seems to have funny gummy aftertaste. Not much here for me to rave about. Other offerings from Anchor Steam will get front billing.

Poured up on tap at GABF 2012 (also had this at the Pleasanton Hopyard back in 02/12 didn’t bother rating for some reason) with a crystal clear gold body supporting a nice firm light tan colored head of foam. The aroma offers up sweet and lagery notes with a sort of Bohemian Pilsener sort of feel as well as a bit of floral hops. The taste is pleasing and refreshing as it delivers some fresh bready to grainy malts and then it gets a thin pulse of modestly bitter hops coming to the surface. Off into the finish it leaves behind a classic lagery yeastiness. Great session-y as well as hot weather summer beer.

355ml bottle into schooner glass. Malty nose, classic looking golden amber beer with solid white head. Medium carbonation with fine bubbles. Nice hoppy taste, medium body and good long bitter finish. I reckon you could drink a lot of these in a sitting.

Clear light golden with a small white head, light lacing. Aroma of hay, cereal and yeast. Flavor of straw, cereal, bready, grainy and honey

35,5cl bottle from MS Viking XPRS. Pours clear golden with a white head. Mild hoppy and malty aroma with lightly fruity and grassy notes. Moderate sweet with mild, but rather nice and balanced hoppy and malty flavours and a certain bitterness in the finish. Plain, but balanced and rather tasty. Sessionable.

Draft: Poured a golden with nice frothy white head. Aroma was sweet with light grain and floral perfume. Taste was crisp fresh, mix of grain and balance malt body.

355 ml bottle, as Anchor California Lager, from Fakta, Denmark. ABV is 4.9%. Golden colour, moderate white head. Sweetish aroma of malts and floral, herbal and fruity hops. The flavour is medium dry, well hopped throughout, with a fairly bitter aftertaste. A well made lager - simple, but decent.

Pours clear amber with a thick and frothy eggshell head. Crisp, fruity aroma has a malty underpinning. Flavor has nice, crisp malty and pomme tones. Body and fizz are average, but it is good drinking. Could be a good gateway beer to wean people off industrial sludge.

I'm not sure what makes a lager "Californian", but this pretty much seems like a standard lager to me. I thought it would involve some more hops, which I would have preferred. Noticing the craft brewers throwing the lager into the mix, but I think it is more to convert the macro-swill drinkers. This is more of a spring/summer beer to me...and even then it would be tough to pay $10-$11 for a 6-pack. Watery and refreshing though.

Thanks to my neighbor for a few cans of this! This is a really nice lager - it could easily be the "go-to" beer. It is clean, crisp, and has a nice full flavor. A great representation of an American Lager.
