Aroma: 8 | Appearance: 7 | Mouthfeel: 6 | Flavor: 6 | Overall: 6
Draught at the Anacapa Brewing Company brewpub, downtown Ventura, CA. Quoted to be 7.0%ABV, with 69 IBUs.
Did a six-beer sampler set of the Anacapa beers when I first stepped up to the bar. Without even noticing the blackboard above the bar, I was able to pick this one out as the "least worst" of the bunch -- and the only one with any real substantial hop and malt character. It was only after I ordered a full pint of this did I notice the blackboard, that stated that this was their self-proclaimed Double Red Ale. I'm not too comfortable with style semantics, so I'll just say "bigger-than-average Red", and leave it at that.
Burnt-redwood in appearence, with a sweet-ish (BBQ?) aroma. Slightly slick in the mouthfeel, and perhaps a touch on the hot side of things, but works well enough with the hop load at least. The aforementioned 69 IBUS (with what IBU Calculation Method, I wonder?) have to fight the semi-sweet malt profile, but are still assertive enough to make a statement, me'thinks.
Not perfect -- but the best of the Anacapa bunch. The same rather acidic/acrid mouthfeel that I found in all of the Anacapa beers is the most hidden with this one -- thus proving the ol' adage that with enough malt and hops, you can pretty much hide any brewing fault....
