Allagash Black, our new Belgian style stout, is brewed with German 2 row barley, Torrified wheat and oats, balanced by a large addition of Belgian dark candi to give the Black a full and silky mouthfeel. Roasted malts give this stout its classic chocolate, toast and malty taste, and contribute to chocolate notes and a hint of roasted coffee in the aroma. The Black is fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and refermented in the bottle with the methode champenoise to make this beer truly unique.

Pours a dark mahogany with a thick off white head, and ample carbonation feeding it for great retention and sporadic lacing. Aroma is nutty, pecans, some roast coffee mixed with wheat and grain, and hints of sweet molasses. Flavor starts with cereal grains and some toffee, followed by walnuts, burnt toast, light brown sugar, and finishes out with black pepper, grass, and hints of chocolate. Mouthfeel is maybe over-carbonated and I would have liked a little more sweetness, but that seems to be a trait of Belgian style stouts. One of the better Belgian style stouts I've had, most have been flops.

Thanks to Metalchopz for picking me up a small bottle at the brewery. Pours an average size frothy beige head but then dissipates to barely a thin coating. Has a very dark brown almost pitch black appearance. Decent sticky lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, barley, coffee, notes of licorice and chocolate. Flavours are mostly dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee. A little bit of resin and a touch of licorice in the finish. Nice smooth and slick mouthfeel. Slightly astringent. Lively carbonation. Medium body. Pretty easy going for a moderately heavy stout.

Dark brown pour. Bubbly head disappears quickly to form a ring and a smear. No lacing. Aroma and flavour of roasted malt, chocolate, licorice, tobacco and yeast. Not quite a stout style body but ok beer overall.

Dark brown pour with a small, disappearing head. Aroma is dominated by roasted malt and, to a lesser degree, coffee and chocolate. The roast malt also leads the flavor profile followed by hints of coffee and chocolate. The Belgian yeast shows up at the end of the mouthful leaving its signature taste and leaving a tart, bitter finish. Carbonation is above average and the mouthfeel is a bit thin for a stout. When I opened the bottle, the smell reminded me very much of Guinness Extra Stout, but by the end of the journey, this beer proved to be pretty unique.

Purchased at Shaw's in Auburn, Maine. Pours a dark brown colour with a big frothy beige head, good retention and some lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and candy yeast. Milder tasting but with a nice balance between bitterness, sweetness and roastiness. Goes down nicely.

Beautiful clear brown, nearly black, with a tall and persistent khaki head. Sweet citrus aroma like pineapple and orange, a whiff of spice. Rich coffee & char flavors like a stout, but they're carrying something like a Belgian dubbel on their broad shoulders. This is harmony. This is delicious. The winter Olympics are opening tonight, and I want Allagash Black on my team. Good tingle, just the right weight, unsticky but feels clean.

Sampled with KnoxBeerCrew. Near black/ brownie pour, rather thin for a "stout", tight beige head, good lacing. Aroma reminds me very much of New Glarus Old English Porter: slightly smoky and funky, roasted malts, definitely get the Belgian yeasts on this one, cocoa, roasted nuts. Flavor is not as heavy as the nose with a nice light cocoa-toasty taste, slight funk and sour, hint of smokiness, more toasted malts. Very nicely done - would love to try more of this one.

    750 bottle corked & caged -

It's been awhile since I've had an Allagash product, as I always think they are incredibly overpriced for such a mostly average product. But this was a great, great beer. Tons of roasted malts, lots of choco-mocha flavors. Almost dessert like with the toffee, chocolate, coffee flavors. Aroma was nearly matching the aroma, but some really nice smokey aromas coming out. Very well attenuated and basically nails the FES style. Great beer.

Bottled@Monks Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Very deep brown colour with a mediumsized brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, mild toffee as well as some mild fruity notes. Flavour is rather similar in a nice balance. Towards the end of the bottle it gets some slight yeastyness to it as well.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Lacing is good. Aroma is mocha, malt, and caramel notes. Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated. Flavor is a bit of dry chocolate backed with sweet. Nice.

Mar. 2010 - Dad came over with one of these today. Dark pour, smallish head. Full of chocolate and roasted flavors with a fruity sweetness at the end. Flavors reminiscent of what a foreign stout/baltic porter should be. Not overly smooth and easy drinking, but pretty well crafted. Worth a try, but probably not quite worth the $14 or whatever these high priced Allagashes are going for these days.
