During the summer, YuleSmith is transformed into a big, hoppy, Double IPA. The enormous load of hops requires a substantial malt background to create just the right balance for a Double IPA. Lighter in color, summer YuleSmith is available around the 4th of July and is packaged in a red, white, and blue bottle.

Pours a very hazy dark amber color with peach highlights. Very frothy and bubbly two finger cream colored head. Looks like a marshmellow that was just taken of the fire. Ridiculously sweet retention and amazing frothy lace. Citrus and pine hop notes dominate the nose. Nice spicyness in there too. Maltyness is slightly noticeable, but isn't able to compete with the level of hops. Hops. Pine and citrus fruit hop flavors cross the tongue with a bang. Good sweet malty backbone keeps gives this beer an even keel. Smooth and creamy on the palate--extra soft at first. Good level of bitterness coupled with a dry finish. Bitterness lingers for a pretty long time. Oily and a bit sweet when you lick your lips. Level of carbonation is perfect. Highly drinkable double. I was very excited when I saw this on the shelf. I immediately put it in my cart. Pretty damn tasty--can't wait for the winter version in order to compare.

Great use of hops, we'll made, easy to drink and very tasty. I wish all bombers were as modestly priced as this one, but then lots of good west coast brews are so maybe they could teach everyone else how to price beer?

Just freaking awesome! Pours an incredible orange color with a huge white head with excellent retenition and lacing for days. Aroma is hoppy with a citrus fruittiness along with a hint caramel and malt. Flavor is boldly hoppy with a slight hint at alcohol. Enough malt to back it up. About the best IPA I've had in a while.

22 oz bottle, bottled on 5/1/14. Pours clear golden orange with a huge frothy white head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is sweet sugary fruits and some resiny piney peppery hops.
The flavor is sweet bready malts with some fruit and a big piney, resiny hop bitterness that lingers in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.
Overall, a solid DIPA. I remember liking the winter version better. -

8.5%abv on bottle. Looks and tastes splendid. Foamy big white head lasts the distance with some great lacing. Aroma is sweet fruity and herbal. Smooth almost full mouthfeel. Flavour is hoppy. Big pine, grapefruit, lemon, orange peel, grass, a little floral and spice. This is all helped along with some caramel malt and honey sweetness. Great any time of year.

Wonderfully hopped West Coast IPA. Juicy fruits and soothing pine. Dry bisciuty malts. Big clean bitterness, awesome mouth feel. Light golden copper body, huge frothy white head and massive lacing. Top notch fresh hop monster.

Shared bottle at local tasting, thanks to gunnar. ABV is 8.5%. Golden colour, huge white head. Sweetish aroma of malts and orange marmalade. Distinctly hoppy flavour throughout, very bitter finish. Maybe not very complex, but good.

Beer 7 of my 12 Beers of Christmas. Wish list item courtesy of Chris @ Bearden Beer Market via trade for some New Glarus. Beautiful clear yellow amber pour with a thick fluffy creamy white head and heavy curtains of lacing. Nice carbonation. Appealing aromas of peaches, pineapple and slight grapefruit in the hops and a nice balance of sweet caramel malts with a hint of honeysuckle. Taste is exquisite with a big sweet and hoppy mix, the peach and fruit hops upfront and clean, with a welcome balanced sweet honey and caramel malt to sustain and offset the bitter. Great linger and wonderful flavor altogether. Glad this one was included in my 12 Beers of Christmas 2010. This beer is worthy of the accolades - Awesome and Worthy.

bitter orange is the story here. in the nose and in the flavor. not that well balanced, whixh is quite alright with me. for now, i actually like their ipa (my favorite at 4.5) and the winter yulesmith better, but i've had those fresh, and this beer was brewed for july and sampled 11/4. Fresh, gotta bump it up a tenth...btween a 4.4 and a 4.5. Great brew.

22 0z bottle into a snifter. Pours a lemon-orange with a huge pure white head. This head retention was as good as I have seen on an IPA and the lacing was extraordinary as well. Aroma is a wonderful nose of floral, pine, grapefruit, orange. The taste begins with some pineapple, grapefruit, peach and orange and some sweet malt (caramel/honey). This gives way to a little spice, some light bready notes and ends with a nice hop bite. Mouthfeel is creamy, medium with moderate carbonation. This beer has such a nice balance - nice edge/graininess and hops perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the malts both as you drink it and after. This is a great beer and one I will aggressively seek out again.

Bottled. Orange colour, big white head. Aroma is very fruity and flowery hops along with some nuttyness as well as caramel and malts. Flavour is very hoppy, grassy and some fudge and some mild alcohol. Also nuttyness. Big grassy/fruity aftertaste with slight earthy and nutty notes.
