Alaskan’s spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA. Alaskan’s spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a 1 inch foamy dark khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin foamy rings of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell nice with plenty of citrus, pine and herbal hops. Taste is of the pine/herbal hops up front with the dark roasted malt flavor coming on quickly and holding on until the finish. This beer has a crisp level of carbonation but the body is somewhat thin. Overall, this is a pretty good black IPA but it smells better than it tastes.

Sampled on 2/26/2012. This Black IPA pours a dark brown color from a 12 oz bottle. Small to medium sized white/tan foamy head, with decent lacing. The aroma is roasty malts, caramel, a touch of chocolate and some piney hops. A medium bodied Black IPA. The malts are caramel, chocolate, coffee and roasty. The hops are floral and piney. Decent carbonation. A little more dark roasty malt and a little less hop bitterness and flavor in this beer, it is kind of different than most Black IPAs. Very drinkable, much more of a session beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

12oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big fluffy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.
The aroma is roasted malts, a little chocolate and dark fruit, and piney floral hops.
The flavor is roasted, slightly acidic, malts and sweet dark fruit with some decent piney bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is fairly light bodied and watery.
Overall, a decent Black IPA. Kind of reserved, but balanced. -

acheives a nice complexity of chocolate and roasted malts and a healthy dose of citrus in the nose and flavor. light, but more bitter in the aftertaste than expected. a sessionable, but flavorful black ipa...and better IMO than their double black ipa that was more for one bottle than this one was for a six-pack.

It pours a dark cola color with a thick and foamy tan head and some residual lacing. An aroma of roasted malts, hops, pine, grapefruit and orange, grassiness, and light spiciness. The mouthfeel is smooth and rather rich. Flavors of roasted malts, coffee beans, chocolate, hops, grapefruit and citrus, raisins, and light spiciness. Excellent and refreshing ..

Had this on tap at the Tipsy Cow a couple days ago. Pours a pitch black, thin brown head. Aroma is full in your face coffee grounds, burnt toast and earth. Taste is a little overwhelming. Similar to the nose, it seems a bit off balance with a bittering hop finish.

Newly distributed in ND and reasonably priced. Pour is black (a-duh) with a small tan head. Some citrusy hops play second fiddle to the dominant roasted malt and coffee aroma. Kind of thin. Hops again come in second in the taste. Not my favorite for the style--I expected a larger hop presence.
