Rated in Dec. 2012. Thanks to dak for sharing this beauty of a beer. It pours murky mahogany with a light mocha colored had of foam. The aroma offers up an interesting mix of notes as I get dark roasted malts, some pine to earthy/spicy dank hops and then an earthy sort of boozy barrel note swirling about a sense of chocolate right at the end of the draw. Cool. The taste is similar with highly roasted maltiness, a good firm pine hop component and then it seamlessly picks up some velvety thick chocolate. Behind those well blended notes are smooth sweet booze and barrel/wood flavors that enhance the experience. Well done. A terrific base beer with spot on barrel contact. Wow! I wish more barrel aged beer had this sort of balance and harmony. Lovely stuff.

This beat the Highland Edition (quite good on it's own a couple weeks ago) in a straight head to head. The scotch effect is a little more earthy and peaty, and the feel was fantastic - obvious lower heat in this version, with all the black sticky, hoppy, scotch goodness. Awesome brew!!
