Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002, is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste. Available all year round.

Sampled on 6/10/2011. This stout pours a dark black color from a 500ml bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head with decent lacing and nice retention. The aroma is chocolate and dark fruit. A medium bodied stout. The malts are chocolate and dark fruit. The hops are herbal. Decent carbonation. Nice balance. A nice candidate for a session stout, it has good flavor, nice body and fairly low in alcohol. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of coffeem sweet malt, earthy. Tastes soapy with some coffee hints. Weird aftertaste. Not much to this beer.

Interesting, rarely see a head this size on a stout. Rich and roasty flavor, once the head finally goes away. Hot chick on the bottle, but this is really all this beer has going on. It's really just a stout. Nothing to see here, move along, move along...

The bottle's fat body and narrow, straight neck, made it impossible to keep this beer from glug-glugging, but that was only part of the reason the beer had such a huge head. Long after pouring you could see sheets of super-tiny bubbles weaving upward to a head that never quite faded. The body was darkly black, and took tilting to see any color. The aroma was light except for a sour dish-rage smell that was a little off-putting. The flavor was not sour, but after an initial bit of roast, tapered off to be more on the bland side. Very dry though.

Sampled from bottle. Pours opaque blackened-brown with a generous tan head and frothy lacing. The beer's about as attractive as the label. Aroma is like a mix of mocha and expresso and a hint of some soured milk. Flavor is nicely bitter, quite malty with a heavy dose of roasted/burnt malts. Full-bodied, well-carbonated and pretty easy to drink. A pretty good dry stout.

Pours black with a very tall, airy head. Smells like sweet coffee, also the aroma is spicy for a stout. Roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and anise comprise the flavor that finishes bitter-to-dry. Smooth and medium-bodied, works for session drinking.

Black body with a hint of amber highlights when held to the light. A large light tan head. The aroma is blueberries with some molasses and roasted peanuts. The taste is a light toast with some roasted peanuts. There is a nice cocoa finish in this. The mouthfeel is creamy and somewhat rich, but not thick. A decent, but light flavored stout.

(Cask conditioned). Sampled at the Wear Valley CAMRA beer festival. (Room temperature). Low (natural) carbonation, some lacing. Black. Surprisingly fruity and flowery notes in the aroma. Roasted flavour with fruity tones, nice bitterness.

Not a bad looking girl on the label but the beer isn’t that great. Sort of a metalic and sour smell before the real stout smells kick in. A bit bitter finish after the tyoical chocolate and unimpressive coffee tastes. Worth finishing but I wouldn’t buy it again.

A wonderful stout, one of my favorites. Pours pitch black with a thick fluffy beige head. Aroma is roasted coffee and burnt chocolate. A wonderfully smooth stout, with a nice dry finish. Taste is roasted coffee, with undertones of chocolate. A fine beer no doubt.
