Vapeur Cochonne

Circa 2007 bottle labeled "Vapeur Cochonnette". Or at least it was when I first locked it away in the basement. The label was soon misplaced. Initially served as a mystery bottle for my own amusement. Ommegang chalice. Pours a deep chestnut brown with maroon highlights. Well settled. Lumpy, hollow off-white head. Sour lemon & dark cherry/plum notions, barely held together by dusty wheat/yeast, clove, & macerated stale crackers. Taste is much the same, with more of a vinegar sour, with am old, plummy brown ale playing off that. Never getting hazy till the very end of the bottle. Big cardboard & macerated sweet notes, but the alcohol manages to remains quite well in check. Could of been worse. Though I've never had it before, so what do I know? ;P

Clear brown with orange edges, low disappearing head. Sweet aroma of dark bread, cherries, toffee and brown sugar. flavour of toffee, yeast, immature cherries, nutmeg and bread with a sourish undertone. Clean mouthfeel but the yeast profile feels unclean. Spicy and fairly roasty warming aftertaste. Average Belgian.

Enjoyed on October 21st, 2008 at the Pub St-Alexandre in Quebec City. My friend Driss had this 750ml bottle, and could not finish it, so I dug in. Written 8% ABV. on the label. Poured a cloudy brown-red colour, with a beige head, decent lacing and a little sediments in it. Had a big dark fruit aroma to it, with raisins, plum and Belgian yeast. I did notice a mild farm scent at first (but it was not as bad as it sounds). A little tarty mouthfeel, but mostly watery. Dark fruits were in the taste as well, with some red apples in the finish. A little earth came out in the aftertaste. Worth trying, but not one I would seek again.

The beer poured amurky golden brown with a creamy tanm coloured head. The aroma was malty with sweet hints, particularly cherry/grape. The mouthfeel was thin-bodied, and very champagne-like. The flavour was also champagne-like in that is was light malt and fruity spices.

Bottle: Poured a deep cloudy brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of sweet malt with some funky notes which don’t balance well with the malt. Taste is also dominated by some nice medium sweet Belgian malt notes with a weird funky finish which I can’t say for sure that I really enjoy. Full body with limited filtration and some great carbonation. Interesting but not sure I would go for this very often.

This is a dark cloudy brown Belgian ale. The head is generous, tan coloured, and lasts a while. The aroma is sweet malt, sugary, with some spiciness. The flavour is very complex. One can taste the sweet malt, the sugar, as well as hints of vanilla and licorice.

"No sir, I don't like it" (said the Horse on Ren & Stimpy). Pours as one might expect a serious Belgian ale...dark copper orange with a foamy tan head. Great lacing. Aromas is FRUIT. Flavor (this is where they lost me) is over the top with sour fruit. I dunno, I want my beer to first taste like beer, and then perhaps have a flavoring. In this case, it just tastes so overwhelmingly like rotting fruit that I will be pouring it out.

03.22.05 11.2oz Cochonnette. Hazed and speckled beer-bottle brown pour with thick, foamy, lasting tan head leaving plenty of lace. Beautiful aromas of tawny port and orange marmalade are kept in check by less attractive, somewhat woody but moreso chemical aromas. Great yeast character, nutty, orange pith, orange tea, dried orange rind, and hints of curacao and cider. Fascinating and really, I think, delicious. Pretty sweet and medium-thick bodied, but tingly effervescence. Fruity finish.

1996... Poured a hazy golden color that had no head. Aroma of tropical fruits, port, sweet honey, and caramel malts. Taste of tart citrus, some lemon, grape skins, honey, and a touch of brett.

Pretty, deep red, hazy body with a large, noisy cream-colored head on top. The aroma is grapelike and sweet, almost like a port. The flavor is soft and warm, dark, nutty malts mingle with raisins and more port-like grapes. I thought I was getting coffee-like notes, but after reading the description, I’m betting it’s from the chicory intead of the malt. Tasty.
