Ingredients and techniques from two different areas come together to produce the beer in this bottle. Van Twee (From Two) is the remarkable result of a collaboration between two breweries know for extreme innovation: Bell’s Brewery of Kalamazoo, MI and De Proef Brouwerij of Lochristi, Belgium. Special emphasis was placed on using ingredients from both Belgium and Michigan in designing this beer. Michigan is renowned for producing sour, dark cherries of superior quality, and a significant quantity of cherry juice was added to the brew. Deep hued Belgian candi sugar adds to the complex flavor of the beer. The sugar used for bottle conditioning came from native Michigan sugar beets. A finishing fermentation with vinous Brettanomyces strain of yeast complements the unique New Zealand hop variety, Nelson Sauvin. The result is broadly a cherry infused ’mash-up’ of the porter and dubbel styles, brewed to an original gravity of 1.072 and fermented with multiple strains of yeast. Each ingredient used brings a subtle hint of a varied fruit such as plum/prune from the roasted malts; gooseberry/grape from the hops; pear/banana from the yeast and specialty sugar; and of course cherry. These flavors are wrapped in a rich and complex roasted malt base that imparts flavors reminiscent of chocolate and coffee--much like the famous filled chocolates of Belgium. We hope you enjoy drinking this beer as much as we enjoyed making it for you.

Pours dark bown black with a really decent head. Aroma of cherry, chocolate - the tart is balanced by a sweet on the back of your tongue. Very nice all around, definitely recommended.

Shared bottle from lilmiss. Deep ruby brown pour with a fluffy head and ample lacing throughout. Tart cherry, rich cocoa, and sweet malty aroma, rich, funky, complex, with Belgianesque yeastiness. Flavor is sour tart and rich cherries, rich chocolate and malts, funky yeasts, lightly warming, ultra satisfying. Thanks Aimee for sharing this epic brew.

A deep reddish brown body, the head is nice and thick, but slowly fades down leaving a fair amount of lace. The sourness from the cherries is the most prevalent feature with minuscule hints of earth, chocolate and floral tones. Overall it was ok, i wish the other attributes would have been more assertive.

This was an outstanding beer. A dark brown beer, colour is solid, head is creamy, and maybe 1" in size. There was a lot of sweet and sour smells in the aroma. Tart cherries, and candy sugar seem to be the dominant aromas along with some roasted malt and anise. Flavour is exquisite...a nice balance between the dark roasted malt, and sweet sugar and chocolate with the tart cherry notes and the bitter finish. Outstanding!

Sampled 11/20/2009. This Belgian Strong Ale pours a dark brown color, with some beautiful reddish highlights, from a 750ml bottle. Large sized beige foamy head, with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is chocolate, cherry, funky and tart. A medium bodied Belgian Strong Ale. The malts are fruity, cherries with a touch of chocolate. Some brett, some funky, some tartness. Nice carbonation. A nice interplay between the chocolate and the cherries. The flavors really open up as the beer warms. Lovely beer. I wonder what a year of two of bottle aging would do to this beer as the bretts do their work? Hmm, think I will need to do some testing. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
