The new masterpiece from the Val-Dieu brewery. A very complex and full-bodied beer with a long aftertaste. The brewmaster advices to cellar the beer for a year for it to unfold its full potential.

The beer pours a translucent dark cherry red colour (when held against sunlight) with a generous dark tan coloured head which lasts. The aroma is Belgian yeast, some tart cherry notes, roasted malt, and burnt caramel. The mouthfeel is full bodied with above average carbonation. The flavour is sweet roasted malt, burnt caramel, some nutty notes, and yeast. This beer warms the stomach, which means it would have best been drank when I bought it as there was snow on the ground and currently it is 75 degrees.

Bottle. New beer at the Liquor Store. Colour - Murky dark brown with red edges, huge light brown rocky cap. Aroma - roasted malt, burnt sugar, dark fruits, yeast, and light chocolate notes. Mouthfeel - medium bodied, well carbonated. Flavour - burnt carmel, yeast, roasted malt, and tangy malted notes on the sides of the tongue. Quite good and quite drinkable.

This poured a dark brown color with a reddish hue. The aroma is complex with some chocolate, caramel, spices, and herbal notes. The flavor is rather malty with some dark fruit, chocolate, spices, and alcohol. The aftertaste contains some sweet and boozy notes. Overall this was a pretty good belgian.

Cola brown, with a thin film floating on top. Hints of red wine, plum, brown sugar................ all very faint. Taste is faint, sugar, cherry, toasted malt, oaky, watery. This is a bit of a let down. Completely tasty, completely forgettable.

Very dark with small off white foam head. Aroma is very complex, known but can't place it. Taste fruity, some bacon (?), long lasting sweet palette. Did not expect to find this beer in Rome. (Rome 201205)

Dense mahogany-ruby color with a delicate white head marked by light lacing. Soft and light palate, aroma of powerful dark fruit and spice with softer flavors of grapes, berries, bready malts and light spice.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep brown color ale with a full foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma consists of sweet malt with some candi sugar and some dry fruit characteristics. Taste is also a well balance mix between rich Belgian malt with notes of candi sugar and some dry fruits such as raisins and plums. Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done and some thing that I would have on a regular basis.

Sampled on draught: Pours a deep mahogany colour with a small off white head. Rich, bready with notes of spice and berry fruits. Aroma is pleasent, with raisins, toast, maple syrup and apple cider notes. As I mentioned, it is a rich complex brew, but still clean on the palate.

Dark amber colour with mediumsized white head. Aroma is licorace, yeast and malts along with alcohol. Flavour is dominated by plum, yeast and toffee. Alcohol and malty hints are in background. Very wellbalanced beer and great palate.
