Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes, raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer. Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in memory of two great people (ABV 3.1%, IBU 2, SRM 2, Format 30L kegs).

Pours eerily similar to an adjunct lager with massive carbonation and minimal head retention. Aromas of grass and hay, barnyardy with a slight funk presence. Very light and acidic mouthfeel lends well to hot summer days. Thin and watery with notes of apples and pears with a slight tart finish. Very nice for the style.

From Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, OH. Light thin hazy straw yellow pour with a initially tall white head which dissipates quickly leaving light lacing throughout. Well carbonated! Light tart nose, a touch weaker than other Berliner Weisses that I've tried, a touch of wet wheat, lightly floral hopped. Thin mouthfeel. Tart flavor, mildly tart, not nearly as aggressive as other beers of the same style, lemony, light yeasts and floral hops. Very refreshing but I definitely expecting bigger pucker factor. Good, not great.

Bottled. Slightly hazy golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is wheat, some tart/sour wooden notes as well as quite herbal notes as well. Flavour is the same along with citrus and some bready malts. Refreshing and quite pleasant.

Pours out a in a hazy pale golden colour with a small quickly disapearing white bubbly head. Quite astringent but still fresh nose of lemon-peels, lime and mild spices with hints of banana and cookies. Light-bodied with crisp notes of lemon-zest, straw and cookies. Mild crisp finish of lemon-zest and straw. Quite watery of course but it’s still a really thirst-quenching and refreshing wheat.

Oct. 2009 - Pale straw color, very unique funky aroma. The flavor was dry with mild tart sourness. This woulda been a great summer sipping beer. Nice effort.

A very pale yellow color, lots of carbonation, topped with a thick pillowy white head. The aroma shows lemon, wood notes, pears, apple cider, some barnyard funk. Tart tasting upfront; lemons, lime, pear, but watered down and a bit empty and watery in the finish. Lots going on in the aroma but not so much in the flavor department. Light-bodied. Decent.

bretty aroma exploded out of the bottle as soon as i opened it. damn. light fruits. a little musty...barnayard. complex and super flavorful as well. tart...not quite sour. very light. this has got to be a summer regular in the house. would pair incredibly well with grilled chicken, fish, etc... follow ups not as vibrant or impressive. originally 4.3. great beer.

This is my second Berliner Weisse. A rare find indeed. Acloudy-pallid whitish yellow colored beer. Big creamy white head rises above. Impressively long lasting settling into a thick cap above the body. The aroma is tart, lemon hints and strongly suggestive yeast. The body is light and effervescent. The taste is tart, sour and citrusy. At this point I added the homemade raspberry syrup. And settled in for an enjoyable experience.
