Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapin’s Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasn’t enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it with French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience that’s electrifying!

I was [beer] blessed to sample the 2010 and 2013 versions of this beer side-by-side at Churchkey. Wow did time serve it well. Both editions were a solid beer. 2013 had much bolder bitterness and a stronger hops aroma. The 2010 was mellow and woody, heavenly. My score kindly reflects the aged version.

Style here says imperial IPA, so thought this was going to be an oakey DIPA...but bottle says Imperial Red Ale. I agree...not an IPA. Has some hop to it, but too sweet for me with the malt, fruit, etc...quite aggresive. This is actually more like a Belgian Triple. Dark cloudy mohagany color. Good beer with some decent flavor and feel....just not my preferred style. Or, would go with a true Belgian instead.

Ruby amber pour, leaning to the red side, short tight off-white head, decent lacing. Sweet caramel and huge hopped aroma, big on both malts and earthy hops, then woodsy oak and very slight vanilla. Great nose. Flavor is oaked and heavily earthy hopped, caramel sweet malts, very light vanilla, nice long heavy hops bitter linger. Big almost like a barleywine.

Pours an appetizing, translucent mahogany with a fine-bubbled, slightly reddish tan head. Aroma is richly hoppy and has undertones of spice and wood. Flavor is strongly hoppy but not bitter with a definite oaky undertone and hints of cinnamon candy. Smooth, lively texture leaves a woody, slightly smoky aftertaste. Recommended.
